Default Dual Carb Help!!

Hey guys, I've been trying to get a friend of mine 67 GT500 up and running and I need help! I finally got all the brake problems done and out of the way and then out of know where the carbs have taken a dump! The owner had the carbs re done 9 years ago from Pony Carbs and now they are acting up. The front runs pretty good but the back has a sticking throttle shaft and leaks gas now. The car was running perfect and then it would just bogg down horribly when the gas was mashed. After this, the car would not idle and I had to rev it constantly to get it home.

The question is should I get the Carl's ford replacement carbs, get these rebuilt again, or is their a better dual Holley set up that isn't a "zinc" carb???? I see a lot of white build up in certain areas but I haven't taken anything apart yet. I've been reading up on the whole too much ethanol in the gas. Could these be probs as he doesn't put very many miles on the car at all. This is a pretty stock motor and I don't need a double throw down set up BUT Carls' carbs are 1K+ so whats my options??

Thanks for all and any help!! Matt

If they are the original stock carbs and they end up needing a rebuild then have Pont Carbs do it, but don't replace them with Carls new carb continuation runs. Not that they aren't good, but much nice to keep a stock motor together.

Also, see Patrickt's post from today on blowing out the contamination from ethanol relates breakdown of rubber/zinc.

Well the problem is Pony did them once before and the owner swears they haven't been just right ever since. They ran good but not the way they were before the rebuild?? The engine builder set all this up and has since passed. The carbs from carls are of course re issues of the correct carbs and are run in at Holley. I know from looking at other threads your not a huge fan of them but I finding myself stuck. To go out and get these expertly redone is $1500 or so with new bushings and all. The carbs from Carl's are $1050 and most have good response from them. But, I know friends that have these same type of carbs and go through them on a regular base! I swear if it wasn't for the WOW factor I would just go and put a medium riser/ single carb on it and go!

I know others have used a newer aluminum based dual carbs and I don't think the owner would care as much with that. Just as long as it delivered the power and drive-ability he wants. Thanks for the help! Matt

I don't have any issue at all with Carl's. I might even buy a 3255 lemans bowl carb from him. But I'd rather have an original and get it rebuilt and am looking at that too.

I spoke with Pony last week about rebuilding a 3255 and they seem to know their stuff (although I don't have any personal experience with them). They do run test them and get them dialed in.

Three thoughts: Call Pony and explain the situation and see what they say. Rebuild is about $400, a bit more than that if you want them replated too.

Or call Holley's custom shop. They can do the same thing for about the same money.

Or call Keith Craft and have him look at them.

I don't have any personal experience with any of these shops, but all of these are going to be cheaper than buying a new one, you get to stay original and they should perform as good or better than the repops. I believe they all warranty their work so you can send them back if you aren't happy.

Anyway, my $.02.

Well, any comments out there on Survival Motor sports Carb set ups? I spoke with Barry today and got a lot of great info and I think I'm leaning his way. Any thoughts on either the 600 cfm or the 750 cfm carbs. Barry says he thinks the 750's are the way to go to get the best performance. I'm still liking the Carl's Ford carbs for their originality and most seemed pleased with them. But with all of Barry's tricks his carbs have to kick the OEM stuff to the curb. Any thoughts or experiences?? Thanks Matt
