Hi Tom,
I have seen three 65 shelby cobras drag, one lost to a camero, one beat a f430, and one got smoked by 2 seconds by a dodge viper. Also all these cars, originals/replicas/and the shelby remakes(CSX) alike are referred to as 65 shelby cobras even if they are made by superformance, kirkham, or factory five. Shelby buys the rolling chassis from Kirkham for their aluminum body cars that they started reproducing (CSX). Iv'e seen enough drag racing to know that unless this guy is a good driver he wont have a chance no matter what is under his hood, do this bet as soon as possible. Why let him practice? With no practice, he literally can't win this race....

CobraEd 01-31-2011 01:04 PM

I believe that the two cars potential is very very close. However, the Ferarri is idiot proof to drive and the Cobra will be tough to launch properly to get the best out of it.

If the Cobra can use these, it will win !!! :-)

Road and Track's test of the Ferrari.

An earlier poster is right in that the driver of the Cobra and the last 1/8 is where the race will be.

Would be fun to watch.

It's incredible that we can even talk about a race like this.
Drag racing has never been Ferrari's forte (obviously) but it means something to them (Launch Control) and they're working hard on it.
A lot of time has passed between the 427 and the 458.
Not bad for little British roadster with an American V8, originally from a sedan.
I know there's been advancements in the Cobra's drivetrain but I'll betcha there's more R&D in that 458's transmission than all of the Cobra's history.
Yea us.

As Patton said: "I love it. God help me I do love it so". :D

Another (different) Cobra Ferrari race

Not the same as "our" race, but fun to watch none the less.

I don't know about the Kirkham, but I'll race that furrarri in the quarter. I don't even use slicks, don't need no traction control, don't need no paddle shifters.

See you at the track huckleberry?

Drag comparisons

Alot of people here seem to forget this drag race: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP3WLoZ4Wuo That ZR1 is probably in the ball park of what the subject Ferrari can do in the quarter.

Hi everyone. Such a terrific thread. I'm enjoying it a lot and learning even more. All that may be left is just to race. It's really interesting to me that we just don't know the answer of what car is faster even if he drives perfectly -- too many unknowns about the Shelby's make-up. In terms of other equipment, he is not allowed to put on drag slicks -- he has some other more standard sliks on it now. The 458 will definitely be using launch control for the perfect start. And I do think he'll practice, and practice pretty hard. It's a good suggestion that I get out there and do this soon. -Tom

Rodney posted that he can't find the Ferrari forum that the OP spoke about. I have not see a response to this question??????

I would like to check out another side of this debate/intel

Also the first you tube thread sure sounded like a BBF shifting at 7500rpm, are you sure it was a 289?

If the Kirkham owner did in fact utter the words "willow wood brakes" to the OP, he should not be drag racing his car without some practice.

Now that just aint fair!!! How about Tommy turning off the traction control then???

Well, I assume the bet was made with these conditions on both sides, so it is what it is now.

The bad news about these conditions is it will be harder to get a direct comparison because of traction issues. Rather than, driver, car, launch, shifting points, etc. It'll come down to "tire choice" being the primary factor. Shessshhhh, we already know that.... :)

ItBites 01-31-2011 03:53 PM

DMXF,

I am well aware of what furrarris run. Maybe you missed my avatar? I'm not worried one bit...

Excaliber 01-31-2011 03:57 PM

ItBites, AZ vs TwinTurbo, Oregon. Now THAT would be a race! :)

quite likely that the car has billboards on it. I would think that they will act somewhat like slicks for traction.

Doesn't that Cobra MK6 have a 6.2-litre Corvette engine...?
& traction control?

This is a point that hasn't been discussed much regarding the owner of the Kirkham (I think he could be sandbagging a bit). We have to assume that the guy is reasonably savvy (he's apparently made money somehow, and was wise enough to purchase a Kirkham). Given the high stakes of the wager (i.e., a lot of money and egos at stake), it's reasonable to posit that the Kirkham owner is going to do some of his own preparation for the race (e.g., tune engine, make sure car is appropriately prepped, add nitrous, attend driving school, practice at drag strip).

I can't imagine that he's (the Kirkham owner) not going into this with his eyes wide open.

"I can't imagine that he's (the Kirkham owner) not going into this with his eyes wide open."

Why??? I meet a lot of car owners that have no clue about there car! I know I have spent a lot of track time trying to master the ways of the Cobra and to think someone can just jump in and beat a new Ferrari...I hope the Cobra owner dosen't get hurt!

Johan 01-31-2011 06:20 PM

If Mr. Cobra has 5 year old tires, they will not hold air long enough to race much less get any traction. He would get better traction using space saver thinmen 120s than an old set of formica race tires. If he does not get new race tires Mr. Cobra does not stand a chance.
Signor Ferrari has voided his warranty just by posting this thread, so over the long haul has already lost a considerable sum.
Anything could happen. Mr. Cobra has no reason to save his motor. It sounds to me like more or less a pink slip type of deal or might as well be. If Signor Ferrari gets a paint chip his car will be unsellable.
I can't wait to see how it turns out. If there are no new tires forthcoming, Mr. Cobra should just turn his front wheels towards il Commendatore and not let up till he thumps Rosso Corsa, to keep things even.

I did find this video from a guy in Vegas:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7QQr...eature=related

The practice thing may or may not be a good idea.
