In any or all cases, you could certainly build more h.p. than you could handle!
I'm with you on the '64 Fairlane, Excaliber! My first driving experience was in a '64 Fairlane, and not one with the 289 HP engine, only the 260. It had a 3 on the tree and it would hold it's own against a local '64 Galaxie 500XL with a 390/4V and a top loader. The Thunderbolt has always been one of my dream cars (in fact, I had sourced a '64 Fairlane T-Bolt clone with a 406 tripower/top loader setup at the same time I purchased my Cobra, it was a tough decision!!).

As for the choice between the two engines, if it were up to me I'd go with the Boss 429. The 385 series has canted valve heads, and those things really put out incredible HP/torque. I don't know if the Boss heads have the canted valves, but I have to believe they would!!

I've never been a real fan of FE's though, and the difficulty finding parts for a SOHC would lead me to shy away from it even if I were (not that finding Boss 429 parts might be any easier ).

I'm anxious to hear what others have to say!

Cheers from Dugly !!
