Which one of these two classic big block Ford engines do you like better

Which one of these do you believe was the better engine overall and which one produced the most HP per cubic inch. Also, which one do you think looked better??? Not necessarily for a Cobra, but overall.

The high reving overhead cam 427 SOHC cammer, . . . . or the deep breathing hemi Boss 429 in its original dual quad configuration?

I kinda lean toward the Boss 429.

Oh!! Good question, never heard that one posed before. I'll pass on the h.p. per cube aspect of the question and focus, instead, on what would look coolest for the project.

T-Bucket? I might go with the Boss there, a nice mix of old and new(ish).
Cobra? I'll go with the FE Cammer, always a good choice for most Ford product's but not necessarily all.

I'll never get around to building another car, but if I did, I'd really like to do a 64 Thunderbolt, I just love those lines. In that case, I'd have to go with a classic FE though and neither of the above.

In any or all cases, you could certainly build more h.p. than you could handle! :)

I'm with you on the '64 Fairlane, Excaliber! My first driving experience was in a '64 Fairlane, and not one with the 289 HP engine, only the 260. It had a 3 on the tree and it would hold it's own against a local '64 Galaxie 500XL with a 390/4V and a top loader. The Thunderbolt has always been one of my dream cars (in fact, I had sourced a '64 Fairlane T-Bolt clone with a 406 tripower/top loader setup at the same time I purchased my Cobra, it was a tough decision!!).

As for the choice between the two engines, if it were up to me I'd go with the Boss 429. The 385 series has canted valve heads, and those things really put out incredible HP/torque. I don't know if the Boss heads have the canted valves, but I have to believe they would!!

I've never been a real fan of FE's though, and the difficulty finding parts for a SOHC would lead me to shy away from it even if I were (not that finding Boss 429 parts might be any easier :o ).

I'm anxious to hear what others have to say!

Cheers from Dugly  !!

The cammer is a sweet engine but for the kind of money you would spend on it you could get more hp out of the Shotgun motor

hinoonaz 03-01-2011 08:56 AM

That cammer is unreal Al. Take it every day and all day. The hp is across the rpm range over 3500 k isn't it?

rustyBob 03-01-2011 09:03 AM

As far as looks are concerned.....the "Cammer" wins hands down.....
the "Boss 9" is just to odd looking.......
HP wise....the "Boss 9"....

RICK LAKE 03-01-2011 09:58 AM

Are we talking stock or unlimited???

CobraED Ed if money is no limit, cammer in a 600" cubic inch size. Rumor has it there is a couple of them being built. Jon Kaase has built some 600"+ boss motors and has new heads for this block. If I was looking at weight, cammer wins withstock setup. aftermarket block and heads with about a 550 pound weight range, again cammer. Cheaper to build and maintain Boss.
Big question is what looks better to the eye when the hood is raised, Got to go with a 58MM weber cammer just like Al's. Its perfect together. Now driving it with control is a whole new issue. Which ever motor in a cobra you end up with, hope you have a badge and alot of PBA cards to spare.:LOL::LOL::LOL::rolleyes:;):D Rick L.

I was JUST going to post that pic!! Love it, those cammers are so common, dont all Kirkhams come with one?? :D

Feb 9/2011 Email from Kaase:
The aluminum block is adds a little to the bill. The complete engine with the Stack Injection, Billet Specialties drive and aluminum block is right at 34,000.00, dyno tested ready to go. This includes FAST ECU and Harness and really does not cost much more to go to 598 c.i. with the aluminum block

xlr8tr 03-01-2011 12:41 PM

and as I have a 460 already, a Boss might just fit with a bit of work.

What is so odd looking about a Hemi?

lovehamr 03-01-2011 03:18 PM

For me it's not even a question. Cammers are cool but they get trumped by;
