Default Frustrated....

Just bought a Backdraft Cobra from Naples, FL and had is shipped to LA. In one of the many hoops I have to jump through to register in Cali (it is not a new build, I am the third owner) I need to get a Brake and Light certification. I brought it to two places and neither knew how to do it. They told me to call the B.A.R. and they told me to fill out a form the DMV doesn't accept. I also need to get a Statement of Construction sheet filled out by the builder for the DMV and I cannot get a hold of them. So I need some help. Does anybody know a Brake and Light place in LA that they got their Cobra certified at? And any suggestions about getting the build sheet filled out? Thanks guys!

I had it all done. Just got my title in the mail yesterday

Brake and light inspection. just looked in the yellow pages - after calling around to smog inspection places I found a guy local to me in Covina, CA. Super easy.

For the construction, I showed some invoices that had the engine and drive train listed. I also showed the certificate of construction provided by back draft.

You will also need to have a vin check done by CHP. Just call your local CHP office to schedule the inspection. They are about 1-2 weeks out before you can get in there.

At the DMV you will need to register for a SB100 number. This will make the exempt for smog inspection for the life of the car. Go to the DMV first before all the above so you can get assigned a number.

The last step will be to take it to the referee at the BAR. Go to the one in rancho cucamonga. Some refs are tougher than others. The guys here were super cool. They pay more attention to the kids that come in there with a 240sx with swapped out engines that double as drift cars. They see a cobra and they understand.

After you have your vin paperwork, brake and light papers, and bar inspection, go back to the DMV and submit it all to them.

It is really super easy, just time consuming.

PM me is you have any question.

Ps hurry for the SB100. They only give out 500 per year. I was #56 and that was in the 2nd week of Jan.

Btw - I just got mine from Jay at Vintage Autosport first week of Jan, I live just outside LA and am a Chicago transplant. Based on your forum name- sounds like you might be too.

Thanks for the detailed response. And Yep, I am from Chicago. Last hood I lived in was Jefferson Park, couple blocks from Kings Gyros. I miss it but certainly don't miss the weather. I got the brake and lamps done. DMV is going to give me a 30 permit to drive it while I try and get all the other stuff done. I hope I get a SB100 #!

Don't worry about getting an sb100 number. There are plenty left over.

One last item; if the engine doesn't have a closed PCV system in place you'll have to install one or you won't pass the BAR inspection.
