RIP Freddy. I met him at one of the Spring Flings and like all that met him knew right away he was one of the good guys.

Jamo 07-26-2011 12:06 PM

Yup...doesn't matter if it's expected, it still hits hard.

Didn't really know freddie other than his posts, but if he was as good and special as people have indicated, maybe his time here was no longer necessary. He is back home again !!!

Condolences to Freddie's family...and God Speed to the funny man.....he's one in a million!

I've lost many in my family due to cancer....including my father. A portion of this poem by Dylan Thomas, is on his gravestone in Arlingtion National Cemetary. It feels appropriate to share it with Freddie....

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
by Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I did not know Freddie, but from what I've read here I believe it would be appropriate to say that "He Was Promoted Today"!!! If only that we all could leave such a remarkable and lasting impression on those we come in contact with. God bless him and those he has left to honor his memory. My prayers go out to his family.

He is survived by his wife Karen, twin boys Will and Drew, and scores of friends who were graced with knowing him.

God speed on your journey my friend, you will be missed greatly.

Brian, thanks for the picture. I had quite a few non-forum and in person exchanges with Freddie, and one of them was discussing his rib recipe back in 2001 or so. I believe he has posted some inklings of it here as well.

Every time I cook ribs, the family and I think of Freddie, and his graciousness in sharing a few of his secrets. His zeal for life, fun, perfectionism, and all else "that is Freddie" will always be remembered when I stand in front of the smoker, or see someone enjoying a Mojito, or someone enjoying their Cobra. We should all carry forward his wonderful zest for life and sharing.

My sincerest condolences to his family and other friends.

My contact with Freddie was limited to a few light hearted forum exchanges and even there his exuberance and good nature were loud and clear. Those of you who were able to enjoy his company in person are fortunate, and I can only imagine what a great loss his passing is for family and close friends.

Men like him - though their time on Earth is shortened - live more, touch more hearts and make more folks smile than average people could do in two full lifetimes. Clearly a great man - I salute Freddie and send my heartfelt condolences to his family and all of his friends.

Flyin Freddie RIP

Sad day as we lost another great Cobra buddy......Here is note from Doug Reed that pretty much sums up our feelings for Freddie;

My good Friend Freddie Rice from Memphis passed away this morning. The world is a little less exciting, colorful, and loving without him. He really was a riot and the life on any party. Also a loving Father of twin boys 11 years old. Those rain drops you may see are the tears of laughter coming from above, as Freddie continues to spread his cheer. RIP my brother, Luv ya man!

I am going to miss Freddie greatly. He has been a good friend for many years and I feel blessed to know him. If you have photos of Freddie being "Freddie", please post them or email them to me at

Hydramada@gmail.com

We would like to have as many different facets of his life presented in a project being worked on for his family.

God speed on your new journey my friend. Until we meet again.....

If I may ask, what was the cause of Freddies passing.

Edit update: I found my answer on the post by Buz, Via con Dios Freddie, Via con Dios. tin-man

I believe it was liver cancer...

Truly love him wearing his beloved Gashole cap. :)

I merged the original thread from the Texas Club forum into this because of all of the personal expressions over the last few days...seemed like the pics and comments should all be in one place.

CoolCarl 07-27-2011 02:17 AM

I didn't know him. Seems like he'll be missed.

Hate to see a fellow cobra enthusiast go. Farewell Freddie.

gsharapa 07-27-2011 11:31 AM

Thanks for mergering the threads!!
