Default Looking for thoughts (experience) Hoosier tires...

I'm getting closer to order my rims and tires. The rims will be the 289FIA Trigo's 15 inch - now comes the decision on the tires up.
I've read about the Avon (only good) and the BFG (mostly not so good) ---- now how about these Hoosier?

Hoosier Quick Time D.O.T. Tires - SummitRacing.com

The car will be mostly used on the road - may some Auto Cross, but no drag racing.
Thanks for your input...

with the 15" rim your only going to have so many choices in a performance tire. i went down this road a few years ago.
i ended up going with the mickey thompson SR radials. but a word of caution in buying tires from summit. they sit in the warehouse for a while and get hard.
my first set of MT's from summit, were as hard as a rock, when i complained to MT they sent a set right from them, same tire, same compound, was like night and day.

so just shop smart, and the great price might not be so great in the long run.

fred

oh and those hoosiers might get a bit dangerous on the street.......

Mickey thompson et drag radials, I run faster times on these dot radial tires than I do on full race slicks, only a 275 width in the 15 or a 315 and above size which on the rear looks to big in my opinion

Guys, G-Pete said: "mostly used on the road - may some Auto Cross, but no drag racing."

If you want the best, your choices are Avons, Avons, or Avons.

You might want to look at Nitto Nt01s for road race/autocross and the street. Pro level road race tire, but DOT street legal.

Holds 560 HP in mine from cold in everything but 1st. Completely took all the drama out of the car. Not sure on sizes for 15s.

pricing is definitely going to be vastly different. nittos? ouch, avons, ouch.

you want something that won't feel like your on ice if the road is wet, just the morning dew can get slick,,,

Hi FB,
Yes, I know. This topic comes up under different headings every 2 months or so. In short, I think the consensus among drivers that have tried a lot of different tires, is that in 15" DOT radial tires, for street/track use: The M/T SRs are very good at a "reasonable" price; the Avons are the best at a "very steep" price. I know that fordracing65 and Hotfingers are very knowledgable, but I meant to be pointing out to them, that (I think) they were recommending drag tires - not what the OP had asked about. I did not mean to imply that M/T did not offer a good choice - only that the Drag Radials would probably NOT serve the OP well.

Hoosier makes a DOT road race tire too in 15's. They are good but are bias ply. Check out the Sports Car DOT.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Curt, I saw the DOT road race and sports car tires - but they don't make them in the size I want (245-60-15 and 295-50-15) which are about 26.7 inch in diameter.

More and more it funnels down to the Avon CR6ZZ.

I run the Avons. Great tire for the street and occaisional autoX / track day. That would be my recommendation. The Hoosier is a good tire but the bias ply aspect makes them less desirable to me. The sizes are not the best either for a street Cobra.
