Default 1963 Shelby Cobra: Questions

This is my first time to the sight and the following thread is by no means a joke. Not long ago my wife's grandfather unfortunately passed away. The man was a car enthusiast to say the least. From my understanding the family had known about a Shelby Cobra sitting in the garage and had thought little of it.

Come to find out it is an original Cobra, built in England and titled in the US in 1963. I even have the serial number. Anyways how much is a vehicle such as this worth?

I plan on doing a lot of research on its value but would like some initial input. Thanks for your help.

Posting the serial number and condition of the vehicle would identify which Cobra it is and the history of the car, which would dial in closer to it's value.

The VIN is the first step in seeing its history in the Registry.

As stated, the chassis number and a couple photo's will be a good start.

Default More questions/ answers

Thanks for your quick responses. I quess my next question is how do I look up a serial number on a 1963 cobra? Is there a book at the library? If I can't find the answer out myself I will post the serial number. I can tell you that it is 6 figures, 3 letters, 3 numerical digits.

I do not have any photos, I was not at the estate when it was found. From what my mother in law says it is light blue in color, turns on, but has not been driven in many years.

I will try to post some pictures today. Thanks again.

You need the Shelby registry and there is a plate under the hood with the numbers. They are no secret and won't give away your location or any other personal data if you are worried about posting the numbers. People here are great and will give you the straight scoop, but you will get some pokes and jabs if things seem suspect and expect some critics, but that's just life! I hope it turns out to be a great find for you and your family!

Here is a picture of an early AC Cobra vin plate I took a couple of months ago (notice the standard CSX followed by FOUR numbers, not THREE):

Dust.. a word of advice...don't play games here.

Either post the number, get some photos or drop it.

There is a wealth of info among our users, but we don't like our wheels spun.

Dustin:

Please continue to update this thread b/c I think we are all genuinely interested, but SAAC should be your one-stop shop. Here's their appraisal form:

Default Serial Number

The serial number I was given was BEX463.

I will try to get a picture of the AC VIN plate.

Thanks

Wonderful, thanks

Not a Shelby Cobra s/n, but definitely an AC Cars s/n....AC Ace Bristol.

BEX463 is an AC Ace-Bristol (not a Cobra).

I suggest you pop over to the AC Owners Club website and forum, and see what you can find out about the car there.

When you look, check the nose for the droopy side lines around the front opening and check the dash layout

The car you describe is an AC Bristol built in 1958 which left the factory with a 6-cylinder Bristol engine that was later replaced with a Ford "V8" engine. Sold new to PA, it was last known to be owned by D.Richmond. It was originally blue metallic with a red interior. Given that the 221-260-289 cubic inch Ford small-block engines found in the Cobras didn't come along until 1962, your car could have had a version of the Y-block 292-312 cubic inch V8 installed in it, or may now have a typical Ford small block.

As a side note, the VIN plate pictured previously in a post by mreid is a re-pop, as the car in question never had a tag from the factory.
