Sorry guys, but I side with rustyBob on this one. Why be such a dick about it?
I get the "real/kit car" question all the time. My answer? Not real It's a kit!
When asked about the cost, I tell them what it cost to build it.
Why the drama? It is what it is. A kit! No matter what you might wish it to be, it is still a replica of a 1960's legend. It ain't an original! Learn to live with it!
Just answer their questions truthfully.

Good answer.

It really depends on why they are asking. Are they interested in building/buying one or are they just nosey?

I always tell them "I'm not sure what the cost was, my wife had it shipped from South Africa and gave it to me for my Birthday" but I did hear that used one sold at a car auction for over $1.5mil. Let them do the homework! LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a tough world we live in impossible to ever figure it out. After my car was on the road and starting to hear from other Cobra owners, was hearing that one FE powered Cobra owner was dissing my car because of the 460.I personally went to meet this guy face to face.Started a conversation just to see what kind of a person he was, quite talkative I might add. Then told him I was the guy with the 460 powered Cobra,Wow! what a transformation he became very humble all of a sudden.Thought that was really too bad after all we are all adults and what is the big deal, both of us driving kit cars.I preferred a more modern powerplant.PS, he did not want to line them up side by side.

I'm with RustyBob as well
The majority of people don't have a clue as to the value of Cobras, or anything else about them. When you're at a car show or getting gas and someone is admiring your car, I wouldn't be offended or bothered in the least if I were asked about the cost.

I was asked that question a lot at shows and the track. As long as the person asking was doing it nicely and not like he thought that I was an ass hole for having the Cobra, I was more than willing to talk to them about the car and what all it cost. Many were wanting to know how much they cost because they would like to build one and had no idea of what to expect price wise. I would just tell them that there was really no set price and it could vary by huge amounts according to what they wanted on the car and so forth.

We own the cars; we choose how we respond to the question. It sure isn't up to anyone else to suggest how any of us should answer it.

I say, " A lot cheaper if you build it yourself like I did." If they ask, well how much was that, then I tell them. It does seem like a bizarre question until you accept that most people don't mean any harm by it, are looking to make conversation, and are usually decent people.
By the way, for all or you who agree with crustybob, are you agreeing with his message that it is public knowledge, so share or are you agreeing with the crappy and insulting way he delivered it?

Is it Real....How much does it cost????.......... (knock....Knock..with my knuckle on the fender)....Its definitely real.... You know.. some guys have 20-30 grand in their motors alone...now you don't have to spend that much... Kits are available from $2000 all the way up to $100,000, so if you want one the price is open to what you can afford. If you can do the work yourself it will be less expensive, or you can commission someone to build it for you.......
generally they leave with a stare full of wonderment!!! and still some unanswered questions.

I think there are some that are evaluating if it's a hobby they want to pursue. The interest starts somewhere. I don't think it's a big deal at all. I remember being taught that to, but I think we were taught a lot of things over the years that are not valid today with all the information available.

I'm with Bob.
If they show interest, I'll tell them whatever they want to know about the car.

Well I have two answers depending on the idiot who asks:
1. More than you make in 10 years!!
2. I really don't know my accountant sent them the check, I did not have to ask otherwise I could not afford it. How is it in gas mileage? this is the best, aaaah a couple of gold ingots per trip...they do't know what to say
No one with any degree of common sense or courtesy asks these questions.

100% true. Some think it's an intrusion into their privacy and others think it's a question that needs to be answered. Some lie, some are evasive and others just ignore the question and say "What nice weather we're having in February."
Your answer is right for you.

Fortunately, my mother taught me to be polite to strangers.
Some of you should try it!
I can see lots of curious onlookers walking away thinking "What a Jackhole!"
Not the way I want my hobby to be perceived.
Last week I parked at a local beach side restaurant and was approached by three homeless guys that were passing a bottle of vodka between them. They asked the usual questions and then asked how much it cost. One said about half a million. I corrected him and told him what it really cost. They then asked me for money. I said no, but I told them I would bring them some food. I ordered burgers and fries for each of them and took them the food before my wife and I ate our meal. They took the food, said thanks and then retreated to a park bench to eat.
My point: I could have been an asshole and dismissed their feigned interest with a few crude remarks. But then I probably would have returned to my car and found a pile of s--t on the driver's seat. Treat other's with dignity, no matter what their situation. You never know when you may cross paths with them again while they are on the way up and you are on the way down.
But, that's just me!

Also agree but for some it is a real struggle. They can blame their stand-offish attitude on whoever, but it still comes from within. These are not the people you learn things from.Personally enjoy meeting new people especially ones that show interest in the things I live for,the Cobra being one of them. That being said whenever I run across those that do not like to communicate, always have something to say back to them. The very thing that makes this big blue ball revolve.
