SAAC-37 - 2012 Shelby American Automobile Club National Convention

We'd like to invite all our friends from ClubCobra to join in at this exciting event.

This year, the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) will hold its 37th National Convention at Watkins Glen International (WGI) in Watkins Glen, NY.

This is a world-class road racing track, loaded with history from its infancy in 1948 to its position as one of America’s premier racing facilities.
In the old days, the road circuit was held on public roads.

...over the decades the track has evolved to be a major venue for the pros, as well as amateur open track enthusiasts.

The dates are June 7 - 9, 2012. I will post interesting highlights and previews of the many aspects of a SAAC National event on this thread.

If you love Shelbys and Cobras, it is an experience you won't want to miss.

This year, SAAC-37 will be held jointly with the SVRA ( Sportscar Vintage Racing Association ) and we will be concurrent to their Vintage Racing and Enduro event, making for a full four days of track action.
...a classic for both Vintage Racing, old and new Ford and Shelby enthusiasts.

You'll experience Car shows, Concours judging, Vintage Shelby and Cobra wheel-to-wheel racing, parties and vendor exhibits...something for everyone.

Open Track at SAAC-37

SAAC’s High Speed Event at Watkins Glen International Raceway will be NOT similar in concept to the open track events held at past national conventions. We are holding this event in conjunction with the Sportscar Vintage Race Association and we are sharing the race track with them on Thursday and Friday only. We will be on the track in the morning and the SVRA will be on the track in the afternoon. The SAAC vintage racers will practice with the SVRA Group 6, but will have a separate race on Friday afternoon.

As an Open Track participant, you'll get your pit parking in the Paddock with all the racers. Your car will be given a Tech Inspection by the club's team of experienced racers and you must meet the minimum requirements for safety equipment. All cars must have a number on both sides (adhesive numbers or tape is acceptable). Drivers must have a helmet with the correct Snell rating.

Open Track registration can be a Single Day pass or 2-Day package.
You must attend a Daily drivers meeting to review track conditions, rules of the road and any updates. The Open Track Schedule shows that each day has FOUR twenty minute sessions per run group. Run groups are sorted by beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Spots will be allocated in a first-come/first-served basis. Open Track will run on Thursday and Friday. The entry fee is $250 per day. Two drivers may share a car; the entry fee is based on the car, not the number of drivers. SAAC will run rain or shine; no refunds for less than perfect weather. Leaded and unleaded race gas is available at the track; pumps accept credit cards and will be accessible all day.

Run Group assignments will be made based on the experience level of the driver(s), as indicated on the Registration Form.

SAAC expects that all spots will be taken by the time the convention begins, so Advance Registration is encouraged.
