"Classic Roadster" vs "Excaliber"

Ernie,

Now that you've sold your Excalibur...AGAIN, and will be driving one of her cousins, a CR; does that mean you'll be changing your username here too?

OHEKK

Excaliber 10-05-2003 09:22 AM

I've thought about it, but can I keep it for the "memories"? A tribute to the great car? And after all, I wouldn't rule out having ANTOHER one somewhere down the road!

I had dinner with the new owners last night. How delightful talking story about the Excal and Cobra history into the night! Looks like the new owner and myself will doing some work on car #33, isn't that great??? I look forward to staying involved with the car in different ways!

I DO have to let it go though, it belongs to Mitch now and I must fade to black and blend into the background. I DO hope he keeps us informed of it's future adventures!

Ernie

MilwDoug 10-05-2003 05:23 PM

Ernie,

I think Mitch is a lucky guy, he got a great car and a former owner with separation anxiety who just happens to be a mechanic. Sounds like a lifetime warranty to me.

I just can't believe you sold it again after everything you went thru last time. How many times have you been married?

Excaliber 10-05-2003 08:35 PM

I got TWO Cobras, is that allowed? It seems so unfair to have two, I thought I better spread the joy! Yeah, thats the ticket, ha ha.

MilwDoug 10-08-2003 02:39 PM

Tom,

Are they going to use the Excalibur name? I'm sure they won't be DOT approved, will they?

Excaliber 10-08-2003 02:46 PM

No way they could be DOT approved, no way they can offer 100% turn key cars. It would be the same deal as buying a Kirkham, SAI r ERA car. Take it "across the street" to the "other contractor" to get the motor/trans installed.

Good to see Excals being built again though!

Ernie

ohekk 10-08-2003 04:09 PM

Excalibur?

Doug...I'm not positive but I believe the answer is yes.

I asked Nick to post here to keep us informed.

As you know, Jens was adament that he would NEVER...EVER have his Excalibur JAC be marketed as a "Kit".

Ernie...you're right...it's good to see the bloodline continue:D

leslie.files 10-08-2003 04:12 PM

Does this mean that lowly me may be able to get parts for my Excal body in the near future and also some accurate measurements. This is way cool, considering that all that I got was a body and have built just about everything else from scratch. Thanks for coming along now, I may need you soon!

BLACKJACK 10-10-2003 03:21 PM

I SPOKE WITHT HE "NEW EXCALIBUR" GANG AT CARLISLE, PA THIS PAST MAY. THEY SEEM TO BE A GREAT BUNCH OF GUYS THAT REALLY HAVE THEIR ACT TOGETHER.

AT THAT TIME:

** THEY WERE GOING TO CONTINUE THE USE OF THE EXCALIBUR NAME. THAT CAR WAS GOING TO BE THE "EXCALIBUR II".

** NO DOT COMPLIANCE.

** NOT GOING TO BE AVAILABLE AS A KIT.

** TURN KEY WITH THE ENGINE OF YOUR CHOICE INSTALLED "ACROSS THE STREET".

OF COURSE THINGS CAN CHANGE FROM DAY TO DAY.

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE GUYS. (THAT'S NOT SAYING A HELL OF A LOT SINCE I WAS ONCE "IMPRESSED" WITH MY EX-WIFE).

I REALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF USING THE THUNDERBIRD I.R.S.

I WISH THEM WELL AND I'M ANXIOUS TO SEE ONE OF THE NEW CARS COMPLETED.

I HOPE THEY WILL "POST-UP" HERE FROM TIME TO TIME TO KEEP US IN THE LOOP.

Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY,

BLACKJACK

Excaliber 10-10-2003 03:37 PM

,,,,so what is the projected price range????

Ernie

BLACKJACK 10-10-2003 04:39 PM

I DUNNO - - -

I THINK I FORGOT TO ASK THEM.

THERE WAS A BIT OF SALUBRIOUS LIBATION BEING CONSUMED AT THE TIME.

I SEEM TO RECALL ONE OF THE GUYS SAYING THAT THE PRICE WOULD BE "ABOUT THE SAME" AS THE ORIGINALS - WHEN COMPLETE WITH ENGINE AND GEAR BOX.

B.J.

Excaliber 10-11-2003 12:09 AM

You forgot????

:D Blackjack, you crack me up! I probably would have forgotten to ask also.

Originals here in Hawaii were selling for low to mid 50's at the local Ford Dealership (back in the day).

I have a poster in my garage, showing "An Excalibur JAC Cobra"....what is the significance of the " JAC "?

ohekk 10-16-2003 12:40 PM

JAC?

The Excalibur Automobile Company, founded by American designer Brooks Stevens and run by his sons, was experiencing financial difficulties. The ASE certified auto manufacturer was purchased by a pair of wealthy German businessmen: Udo Geitlinger and Michael Timmer. Geitlinger's son Jens was set up to manage the operation.

I was told that JAC stands for Jens Automobile Company.

Excalibur continued to manufacture their classic limos and roadsters, however it was Jens' love of sports cars that prompted the Cobra endeavor. It is my understanding that an engineer from Classic Roadsters was contacted, and subsequently joined Excalibur who then developed the JAC 427 Cobra. Thus the similarity between the Classic Roadster Cobra and the Excalibur JAC 427 Cobra.

OH WELL

JUST THOUGHT I WOULD UPDATE EVERYONE ON THIS THREAD.

ONLY ONE MORE EVENT IN NOVEMBER AND SCOTT LOUGHEED'S CAR GOES BACK TO HIM:CRY:

THE CAR IS TRULY OUTSTANDING AND PERFORMS SOOOOOO VERY WELL. NUMBER 106 IS A GREAT CAR AND HAS FAR EXCEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. AFTER CLUTCH AND SMALL REPAIRS, CHANGING TIRES AND WHEELS TO ACHIEVE BEST PERFORMANCE, THE CAR IS NOW A SLOT CAR ON RAILS.

EXCALIBUR IF YOU ARE OUT THERE.....COPY THIS CAR FOR COMPETITION. FINE RIDE!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU SCOTT FOR SUCH A GREAT RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

JAY

Excaliber 10-24-2003 04:32 PM

I lowered the suspension on mine, put in some stiffer front springs and "dialed in" the suspension in general. Added some Yokohama AO32R's and the difference in handling at the track was night and day!

Indeed the Excals CAN hustle around a track and do it quite nicely!

Later I raised the front end back to about 4 inches clearance from what had been about 3 inches. Handling was only marginally decreased, but "speed bumps" were much more friendly! Not to mention the improved ride quality!

Excalibur update!

OK you guys... several Excaliburs have changed hands recently.

Of course Ernie sold his red Excalibur...AGAIN!

and DLS recently sold his red Excalibur and switched sides ( he replaced it with a Chevy Corvair or chevette or something like that...OOPs I'm sorry .. a "Corvette" ...no hard feelings Dennis...just hope you don't experience Ernies "Sellers remorse"

and another Excalibur was sold out in Denver.

Any way we could get the new owners to sign in?

T

Hey Ernie...When do you get your new Excalibur clone?:D

Ron61 11-11-2003 04:36 PM

Ernie should have only sold the car and not the name. That way he could have kept the original Excaliburs numbers for his new D.V. built, non Hawaii legal, Replica, clone of an original clone of a Cobra. Boy, that was hard to keep track of, but wasn't that what Rolls Royce did to Volkswagen. Sold them the company and then told them they never sold them the Rolls Name and they couldn't buid them. **)

Ron  :3DSMILE:
