Default Registration Question - Proof of Purchase

All,

I just picked up a used T5 from another forum member and I started thinking about the need for proof of purchase. When I built my custom Harley the inspector in Colorado wanted to see the paperwork for the motor, frame and the trans (forget what its called, but basically an original manufactrer cert).

I suspect for the Cobra they will want something to prove the motor was not stolen, but what about the transmission?

I suppose I can ask the seller for a bill of sale, but I have our e-mails showing that we agreed upon a price, shipping info, etc.

The trans does not have the original tag on it anyway, so I don't know how they could tell were it came from.

Lou

I would at least get a bill of sale.

For a car that I built I ordered a turnkey, engine from a vendor that advertised in a lot of car magazines. I paid a lot of money for a built, turnkey engine. The engine was built using a used Chevy block. In the rebuild process the engine ID number was removed when the block was decked. I had a build sheet, receipt from the vendor and shipping receipt. The ****** state inspector would not sign off on the car because there wasn't any number on the block and I couldn't prove that the block used in the build had not been stolen.

For other builds I have shown up with a stack of paper work and the inspector never looked at any of it.

Just depends who you get I guess.

Thanks John. I think I'm going to get a notarized bill of sale.

Lou,

It does not need to be notarized. Just a normal signed Bill of Sale is all you would need. No sense in paying for the notary.
