Carbs not working right..thoughts?
My dual Holly 550s have worked well for 12 years then over flowed 2 weeks ago likely due to a stuck needle.
We rebuilt the carbs. Car starts fine sometimes and hard to start other times. When braking or going around turns rpms drop and engine will die.
Thoughts?

Evan,
Did you replace the floats when you rebuilt the carbs?

Either floats are porous and sinking or you just have to adjust until you find the right level.

I was going to say float adjustment but I think I'm late to the party.

floats are too high. brass being heavier is gonna take more fuel to shut the needles. also under braking the fuel enters the carb through the booster, same with cornering.

Does your car have rubber lines?
REAL 1 Here's my thoughts and problems that are popping up
This applys if the carb floats are setup right. I don't know if the carbs needed rebuilding, was there alot of partials in the fuel bowls?? It,s possible you have a gasket not cut right or sealing inside also.
1 the newer gas is eating the rubber fuel lines in the cars. These small partials are getting though the fuel filters and into the carbs causing all kinds of problems with idling and running. How many gas filters do you have on the car and what size micro are they?? I have had to replace rubbers hoses on a couple of cars already. If you go to plastic, you will need to customize the ends for fittings. Rubber hoses are coming to an end with fuel systems. Emissions systems seam to still be ok.
2 What kind of fuel system are you running, electric pump? or stock style fuel pump in the timing cover? Electric pump could be collasping the sock or screen in the fuel tank. Some fuel tanks have a rubber hose coupler to the screen or sock and this could be rotten away. The fuel pump is having problems drawing fuel up to pump.
Mechanical pump, the diapham could be going bad. Again breaking down of the bellows inside the pump. Have we check the fuel pump pressures to the carbs? his would be a good place to start.
You say that the problem happens on turns and stopping. How much gas is in the gas tank? The sendor could be going bad and you have less gas than what the gauge said. Simple test is filling tank to full and road test. See if you have the same problem. If yes, we look some place else, if not we need to check sensodr for correct ohm reading and level of gas in tank. May just need a new sender. Side note when you stop for gas is there any vacuum or air noise coming from filler when opened?? The vent in the tank filler neck could be the problem. Start with the basics and go from there. Good luck Rick L.

Went back and readjusted the float needles. My engine builder felt the car was running too rich and flooding out and it wasn't a fuel starvation issue.
Adjusted the needles downward. He was right. Problem solved! Car now runs like a champ again.
