The mufflers measure 6.5" X 2.5" X 18" which fits between the rails perfectly with no modifications. I have fabricated headers and 2.5" over the axel pipes. All of it is ceramic coated in black which looks great and semi original. The mufflers sound great! Not too quiet, not too loud, Just a deep healthy tone.

I would be interested in seeing some posted pictures of your setup and the tailpipe routing in the wheel wells. I have mine all fabricated but I'm waiting for the ceramic coating to be completed before I can install them. What wheels and tires are you running on the back?

Almost done....just need to have them ceramic coated. I went with a 3.5" outer body/2.5" inner bullet-style muffler from CCE. They are the unpacked glass-pack style muffler. It gives the tone of an older glass-pack.
If you remember, I had 2.5" pipes going into 2" mufflers. After installing the 2.5 mufflers, the car runs completely different. It felt like the car took a deep breath when I first drove it....so much smoother.
Tone? Well, the owner of the custom exhaust shop said, "It is too loud for me, but I like them quieter the older I get." His daughter works at the shop, and said, "I think it sounds amazing....very mean".
Another friend said, "it sounds like a Cobra should...aggressive and menacing."
It definitely turns heads and gets a lot of waves and thumbs up. I will take some pictures of the new set-up. He made the length and position of the pipes perfect at the rear.
I think the car sounds nearly identical to Colin's narrow-hip car. Colin said that his car has glass-packed mufflers that were installed in 1969. When he told me that, I knew I wanted that older/worn-out/free flowing glass pack tone.:

Having grown up in the 60s I do have a fondness for the old glass pack mufflers from that era. Thrush glass packs with the square ends were my favorite back then. Looking forward to a sound clip.

Wow! CSX 3134 is beautiful and love hearing the exhaust side by side. Our car has a similiar growl.Personally and I emphasize personally, love the lines on a Cobra without the lump of exhaust hanging off the sides.

My first attempt at a You Tube Video. The car sounds much better in person and even better when you are driving in it. I hope you like it. It is very deep and throaty...my cheap video camera makes it a bit raspy sounding. I may have been too close to the pipes.

thanks Dan EC
wondered if that was the case with ERA floors. My mufflers are Edelbroch SDT, chambered with no packing. they sound good, not too loud and quite throaty. centre inlet, offset outlet. my mufflers only hang below the rails about 1/2", so you hardly notice them. consequently, they are close to the floor pan as stated.
I will look into something like the lizard skin as a secondary measure. I have the ACL shield in place above the muffler, although it is mounted 2mm below the floor for an air gap, which leaves about 6-10mm between muffler and heat shield. how far from the floor pan is the top of your muffler??
cheers

Hi Dan,
I have the Sunburst wheels with the smaller size Goodyear billboards on the rear. I also have the longer control arms and half shafts so we may be apples and oranges. I will post some pictures as soon as I can.

That sounds like a nice combination. I considered the longer half shafts but ended up going with SC wheels and a little narrower tire instead. I can see how you didn't have any major problem with 2-1/2 inch tailpipes.
Thanks

I'm still waiting for some of my stuff to come back from the ceramic plating shop. Because my mufflers are only 3 inch thick and that I have to keep the exhaust pipes down below the ERA outriggers from the main frame tube to the rocker panel tube, I believe I have about 1 inch clearance to the floor from memory. Also from memory of my mock up I think the bottom of my mufflers are somewhere around 1/2 inch below the frame rail - I don't have an exact measurement. I think the Lizard Skin on the underside of the floors would be a benefit in your case. LizardSkin® Spray-On Insulation : Lizardskin

I have a Contemporary with 3" out of the collectors through 3" Flowmasters up and over the rear with 3" stainless tips. No headaches or burnt legs. I built the car in 1982 with a big block Chevy.

great looking car.
I just went through the same process on a 427 so ccx, I used cast iron manifolds and
full tail pipes.
I have photos but they take forever to load.

A few pics of my Street Roadster undercar exhaust as I was putting it together.
My car is an NAF and I'm running a 351C with Edelbrock Al heads and a custom made 2X4bbl carb set-up.
2 1/2" Polished 304 SS from headers to exhaust tips.
Tucked along side frame rails, over the rear axle to muffler under rear quarter panel and tips out past rear bumper.
Mufflers are Stainless Specialties (I need to polish them yet) 4"OD and 2 1/2" inlet/outlet.
Blue tape where the cut and mitered pieces were to be welded.
Also a pic of my ceramic coated headers (Schoenfeld IMCA headers that come of the heads horizontally instaed of pointing down so I had no frame clearance problems) and SS down pipe.

I wonder if anyone has come up with an aftermarket shorty header for an FE that will fit in an ERA? I suspect not, but maybe. . .

I went to a custom exhaust shop today. Since my mufflers are already hanging below the outriggers, he said that I can put any muffler in there.
He was a hardcore hot rodder, and his shop logo is a Cobra, which I thought was pretty cool. AND, his name is James Dean. He really knows his stuff, and he is one of those older hot rodders that you hope never retires.
He recommended the 18" Magnaflow oval muffler with 2.5" inlet/outlet. He also said that he can run it out the back and not be limited to side exiting pipes. I kinda like the side exiting but he said we can always change that later.
I think a tubular/glasspack shaped muffler will look better, and I was thinking of the Chambered Classics. Eric said he can make them any length and diameter.
Thoughts? Magnaflow? Has anyone heard the Chambered Classics?
Thanks.
