Never got in trouble with the police, but was told that I can't run autocross at some venues due to the noise. The tracks that I couldn't go to were close to housing so it was understandable. The funny thing was that 2 cobras and 1 VW rabbit were told not to race next time, only the VW owner complained and his car made mine seem subtle!

I'm never hassled by police here in the SF Bay Area.
But then again, rolling it in and out of the garage doesn't really make much noise, except for the squeak of the tires being turned.

No problems for me as well, but the noise has me driving a little more "safe and sane" then I sometime want to, I know this thimg can be heard a mile away and there is no question who is making the noise, so its no longer a matter of just being out of sight when you want a little adrenaline rush.

I have never been stopped in Ontario Canada. I do get pulled over for officers to look at the car. I offer to let them take the car for a ride, while I get a coffee. So far no officer has taken me up on the offer.

So would you guys recommend no packing or fiberglass or something else on my 3" mufflers?
I am in "doghouse" on the sidepipes already. My chaffeur in photo has put up with me for 24 years but she thought the red car made enough noise.
The only cure for "Doghouse test" will be time and TLC!!
Happy 2013.

I'm not a fan of the ultra-loud big block straight through pipes. I had "quiet pipes" fabbed and I am mucho gladdo I diddo.

I've logged 13K miles in Indiana and Ohio and have never been stopped by an officer. 'Course I drive like an old grandpa. Well, kinda like one.

The use of the sound deadening material as used by hot rod guys on doors underneath finished leather does help a lot inside the car. My csx car is loud but inside just fine, no ear plugs needed. Went with spiral inserts on pipes for Bennett car and lost 60 h.p. Had to be as close to original as possible you know??? Afraid of tickets was part of the thinking also.

I like the noise, Its louder than the kids with the window shaking sound systems so I don't have to listen to thier crap, also it puts a smile on my face everytime I trigger someones car alarm

I got stopped once in El Cajon CA after driving down a narrow street with parked cars on both sides. I think I set off about 15 car alarms. The Sheriff's Deputy didn't think it was too great. But, he let me go after I asked him if he was friends with another deputy I know. Sometimes it pays to drop names!

Never a problem in Upstate New York but I'm running Gas-pipes S/S side pipes.

Never even pulled over in about 10k miles. I passed a policeman at 20mph over and he just watched me pass him.
One day I was sitting at a stop light in downtown Indianapolis and a LEO pulled up beside me with his windows down and said "Do you want to race?" I just laughed and he spun his tires pulling away.

During the Monteray car week this year we were driving the streets of Carmel looking for a place to eat when we pulled up beside a CHP on a bike, I asked him if he knew of a place to eat and he just pointed to his ears and said I can't hear you, we all smiled and I drove away.

Never been pulled over for any reason in 14K miles and I have given plenty of reasons. I have Cobra Paks. It is loud. Historic tags eliminate the 'equipment ticket' issue.

My car is (was) really loud. I've had it on the road since 2003 and I have about 35,000 miles on it. I never had a problem until recently when a local cop in my hometown pulled me over and "warned" me that it was too loud. He said I needed to quiet it down and if I didn't he'd pull me over and ticket me the next time he saw me.
I did a little research after that and came to the conclusion that he could probably ticket me, but that it probably wouldn't hold up in court if I chose to fight it. After all, he had no sound measuring equipment and even if he did, the standards for measuring the loudness of a vehicle are very complex. It's not something that you can just do on the side of the road. I also found a CHP document that basically instructed CHP officers not to ticket someone for noise unless their vehicle had no mufflers on whatsoever. It basically said if it has something that looks like a muffler assume it's a muffler don't ticket them.
In the end, I decided that the cop could make my life difficult even if he couldn't legitimately ticket me for noise, so I took my sidepipes off and had different mufflers welded in. Overall, I'm glad I did it. It still sounds good and I can drive around town without earplugs and I don't feel like I'm going to blow out an eardrum every time I jump on it.

On page 2 of Backdraft forum, there are photos of a baseball inside a muffler and an older Backdraft muffler with two one-inch mufflers inside a big round pipe.
Size matters.
