Default Battery Shut-Off Switches

I don't have but am going to install a battery shut-off switch. I was wondering what you guys have done for location of the switch and what kind. Any chance of seeing some pics of what you've installed?? and advice on wiring, grounding location etc.

Thanks,

GregAg

I've had that one for many years. My battery is trunk-mounted. The switch is mounted behind me and to the right of my right shoulder.

Greg, are you wanting the switch for security reasons or are you going to take it to the drags? If the battery is located in the trunk, you are required to have a rear, exterior mounted cut off switch as a NHRA safety rule. You'll also have to wire it so that the engine dies, when it is opened. Just killing the battery won't produce that since it will probably keep running on the alternator output. If you are wanting it just for security, you could install it anywhere that is convenient for you. Just be sure to use a minimum of 10ga wire, 2 or 0 would be better, and I'd stay away from the $10 switches. You may someday be in a situation where your starter is pulling big amperage and you don't want a cheapo switch or light wires to cause a problem.

What David and Karl said. Just be sure you break the positive line-not the neg.
I have mine exactly where David said (same switch too) but they had let me run at my local tracks.

Default Battery Switch

I have a main switch, but it has a removeable key. Im not sure its the best type. Im afraid it be taken and Ill be stranded. So, I put a stainless wire lanyard on it, attached to the underside of the dash.
If i did it again, Id get the one piece switch.

The idea is for you to take the key with you...

If you want it for security, get a Perko Marine switch and mount it in the trunk. You can even get one with a key lock. They're vapor tight so you won't blow yourself up if the trunk is full of gasoline fumes. They can carry a lot of amperage, being suitable for big marine diesels.

I wanted mine for security reasons. I mounted it in the trunk, in the far left front corner behind one of the roll bar legs. When the trunk is locked it is a little extra security for the well-hidden battery switch. Certainly not theft-proof, but hopefully enough to discourage the amateur thief.

My Pos. Batt. cable runs on the driver side of the trans tunnel. I just interrupted this with the switch which is behind me where the tunnel meets the rear panel. I ran a 8 gauge wire from my Alt. to the batt. side of the switch. Because of the carpet the switch kind of disappears and is only known to me.

Default Switch

I have an ignition switch and the main power switch.
I would need two key rings since they arent close to each other.

Battery disconnect in the dash,
cuts power to the engine and starter, switches and lights. Leaves interior lights, hazard switch and 12v cigarette plug bypassed.

Battery main switch (key removable) in the trunk shuts everything down.
Make sense?

The wiring is pretty simple, no grounding - just your 12V +side. Use good connectors.
