SPF Speedo reset
The Smith's speedo has a problem with the little reset dial for the trip odo. When I try to reset the trip odo to zero it just spins, so I am assuming the plastic gears are either worn or stripped. I see there is a small retaining nut on the bottom of the dash with the adjustment knob. Can this mechanism come our and be replaced without pulling the entire speedo? And can this be replaced without a new speedo?

You'll need to send the speedo in for repair. They should never be reset while the car is moving.

I can send you a photo of the backside of the speedo if you like so you can see what you remove to get it out. Send me and email (see below)

Good to know. I wonder if that is also the reason so many 63-67 Corvettes have trip odometer failures?

In my own case I know that if the cable used to do the reset is disconnected from the dash and allowed to have less severe bends that it works. Secured to the dash it does not. So I just let is lay up out of sight. You might try that first.

Probably, And this also related to my old Porsche too years ago....
Not quite sure why I decided to reset it while moving...
But you learn quickly not to do it again.

I've never touched the odo reset out of fear that it would crater the whole speedo. That speedo is a POS. One of these days, I'm going to replace it with a digital unit.

the only thing I use the reset for it when I get gas. I really don't trust the gas gauge that much. Especially in these things, gas does not tend to stay in the tank too long!!!!
