Running Problem
Started my car today and it ran for about 10 seconds and just shut down. I tried another dozen times with same result. Problem is I'm a little mechanical but not sure where to start looking. Need some suggestions if anyone might know what could be causing this. Thanks

Check the fuel pump, and fuel filter.

Thanks Tom. I changed the filter thinking that was it but will try pump as well.

A fuel pressure gauge can be a wonderful thing to have...

Tom, I do have a pressure gauge and I checked my fuel filter which is glass and it shows that it is full of gas. ?

And what does the fuel pressure read when running?

Instantaneous shutdown is spark, gradual shutdown is fuel, which way does it shutdown?

Fuel pressure reading is 6 psi. The shut down is instantaneous.

My troubleshooting process is this: - Remove air cleaner, look down carburetor, fully open throttle and see if fuel squirts. If so, the problem is not fuel. If not, carburetor is not getting fuel.
- Remove the distributor cap and watch rotor while the motor is turned over with the starter. If the rotor does not turn, the problem is with the cam/distributor shaft.
- If you are getting fuel and the distributor rotor is turning, the problem is likely lack of spark due to a problem with the iginition system/wiring.

Does it start right up after every shutdown or do you have to wait?
Does it cut right out or does it burble to a stop?
Is it a mechanical or electric fuel pump?
Are you feathering the pedal during this time and is it revving or are you just letting it idle when it dies?
A full fuel bowl will last more than 10 sec. unless your floats are set very low.
Do you have sight glass for your bowl levels?
Can you see fuel when you rock the car?
How has the car been prior to this?
Is this a new problem or have you been having smaller issues prior to this?

Check the coil.

It does start right up after shut down. I have tried letting it idle and I have feathered the pedal before it shuts down. It is a mechanical fuel pump. I do have a glass fuel filter and there is full of gas. This is a new problem. It ran great prior to this. I'm thinking more along the line of a coil problem as Texasdoc mentioned but wanted some input from some of you before just replacing everything.

I think the Doc could be right also, I just wanted to go through progression to eliminate fuel. Thats easier than electrical, for me anyway. Electronics arrrrrgghh!!!
I meant the sight glass on the fuel bowls. If you don't have them then you'll have to take the little screws out of the side of each bowl and rock the car a little, fuel should dribble out. Sight glass the fuel should be no more than half way.
If a needle is stuck it will allow the bowl to overflow and kill the engine....in 10 seconds, once the fuel evaporates a little you can start it up again and the process continues.
Eliminate the easiest first :)

Thanks. I'll try that first

The glass fuel filter being fill doesn't mean the carb still has fuel. There is now way for air to get back into the line. You can check the bowls for fuel thru the windows as noted, but my guess is coil.

Have you spent any time looking at the ignition system? Are you running a traditional ignition or a more modern ignition? If you have ballast or condenser or voltage regulator that has gone south it may work until it heats up then shut down.

Did you ever figure it out? I would have asked if you had pulled the distributer cap to se if the rotor was moving when the engine cranked? I had similar and the roll pin in the distributer drive gear sheared. Mine was the original 1/8" spring pin that sheared due to the load of hyvolume oil pump additional spring pressue on releif and cold oil. I installed a true roll pin I got from MSD trough Summit Racing Parts( I have a Mallory System)
If you whish I could disscuse it further.

My rotor is turning when the engine is cranked. Right now I'm waiting on delivery of a new coil to try and see if that is the problem. I will keep everyone updated after I get it installed.

Well I put the new coil on and that didn't work. ??????

OK, so what type of ignition system are you using? Do you have the traditional system?
