at airport waiting for my flight and I started reading this thread... and I had a flashback to my days at USC business school. One of my favorite professors wrote on the board, "The best criminals don't rob you with a gun or violence; the true master criminal robs you with hugs and kisses."
CSX rollers starting at $160K for a 60 year old car design?... must have been plenty of hugs and kisses at the showroom.

NYG - take a stroll into the showroom, and take one for a test drive. You'll want one. No hugs or kisses necessary. BTW - they'll sell every single one that they make - at full price.
You can drive a stick can't you?

Whoops! You may want to get a tuition refund from USC. You must have missed or possibly failed Econ 101. You know, the concept of "Supply vs. Demand."

Well the good thing about college is that you get a rounded exposure to lots of things including hippy professors teaching Philosophy elective courses. Having been married in the past, I know exactly what you mean by the type of criminal described by your professor.
Interestingly I was looking at an article recently that had this information in it:
2013 Acura ILX
Base price: $25,900
Fully loaded price: $34,400
2012 Honda Civic sedan
Base price: $15,955
Fully loaded price: $26,900
The ILX and Civic are built on the same platform, so essentially they are the same car with different features for prices between $15,955 and $34,400. The top end of the line is more than double the price of the bottom end. It looks like Shelby is just following the rest of the industry as far as pricing goes.

I don't believe in another 60 years, hot rod makers will say "nothing rides and performs like an Acura."
These hot rods are basic cars: fast gas engines, tubular frames, no fancy gizmos; they shouldn't cost $200K++, or $150K, or $80K.
In 1962, an original cobra was about $6-7K which equals to about $50-55K today. So $50K should get u into the driver's seat for a simple go fast fun hot rod.
It is simply nostalgia that these hot rod makers are selling, and I don't believe the X or Y car enthusiast generation has any connection to these hot rod shapes and will pay $200K out the showroom door for old car technology.

I think you entirely missed my point about Honda and Acura. The point was taking the same basic platform and having the high end version cost about double what the entry level version is. And Shelby certainly has the entry level fiberglass bodied cars, as well as two different price points for aluminum bodied cars. So having the top end car cost twice as much as the entry level version is just following what other car manufacturers do.
And although there are expensive versions of Cobras, you can certainly find any number of fiberglass bodied replicas for a lot less than $80K. But if you are looking for an aluminum bodied car, you will have to spend more than $80K. And the more authentic you try to make an aluminum bodied replica, the more it will cost. And when it comes to Shelby, you are certainly paying a premium for the brand name. You can certainly build an aluminum bodied Kirkham for less than the Shelby.

Better check your math, in 1962 a base Corvette was $4038. $6-7k is 40% on top of that...........A lot of money in 1962.
As a comp: I know in 1961 my uncle bought his first home in the West End (good section) of Allentown. A new 1800 sqft all brick ranch single for $11,000.
