BTW, Kirkham, who supplies the aluminum bodies to Shelby, offers their rollers starting at $80,000.

Anyone ever compare the Kirkham substructure with a CSX4000? Are they essentially the same or is one more high-tech than the other?

Kirkham and Shelby rollers have no interchangeable parts (well, maybe the steering wheel). Just like HiTech CSX glass cars and SPF. They are different. It's a contract manufacturing agreement built to manufacturer's specs. I leave "better" to your own personal views.

No. This has been discussed several times before. The Shelby CSX 4000/6000 frame as well as the Kirkham frames are all built so that they are completely compatible with original 1960s CSX 3000 suspension components. If you want to you can bolt a Kirkham billet aluminum suspension on to a CSX 3000, 4000 or 6000. Kirkham supplies Shelby strictly with an aluminum body on a frame and the only difference that Shelby specifies to Kirkham for the frame is a motor mount location that is different than an original CSX 3000. Shelby builds their car up from the Kirkham frame/body with Shelby sourced suspension, wire harness, seats, carpets, gauges, headlights, windshield, carpet, wheels, ..., etc.
Major things that differentiate an Aluminum Shelby CSX4000 roller from a Kirkham roller:
- Shelby is painted, Kirkham = bare aluminum filed finish with options for brushed or polished finish (if you want your Kirkham painted, you need to get someone other than Kirkham to do the painting)
- Shelby has original CSX3000 tube style suspension with Baer brakes, Kirkham has billet aluminum suspension with Wilwood brakes (Kirkham can has an expensive option for original style CSX3000 tube style suspension)
- Shelby has brand name with CSX 4000 serial number, Kirkham is their own brand with many cool ways to option out their cars.
- Shelby mostly assembled in Las Vegas (keep in mind aluminum bodied cars not fiberglass), Kirkham mostly assembled in Provo Utah. The only exception that I know of is the Shelby Aluminum bodied 50th anniversary cars for which the Kirkham body/frames were shipped from Poland to South Africa for assembly before going to Vegas.

I have to ask; why is there a 1 year-18 months waiting list for a SAI Cobra? After the alum body/frame is put together, the rest of the roller looks easy to assemble.

I suppose for some of the companies it is nice to have a bit of an order backlog when you have a low volume product to make. It can help you plan out your finances. If you scale up to more employees, a larger building, more tooling to try to fill orders immediately or as quickly as possible, you might run into a dry spell and have to think about layoffs, downsizing and selling off some stuff before the next wave of orders comes in. Slow and steady can be nicer than feast and famine.
It is not just SAI you need to wait for. There is usually a wait time for a Kirkham or an ERA (but hopefully not as long as SAI).
