Paid Subscription?

So I get this e-mail telling me to pay up or hit the road. Really? For years this site has been a community of people who by and large chip in to keep it running and to thank the people like Brent who make it happen. I've contributed since day one without threats of being shut out. Has it really come to this?

If you do not extend your subscription, access will be removed.

All the best,
Club Cobra

Seems a little heavy handed doesn't it?

Tim,

I would check with the powers to be first to verify that the email is not a spam. I have not received any email like this.

Jim

Hydramada 01-07-2014 08:42 AM

Sounds like spam scam. Do not pay them anything!

jwoodard 01-07-2014 09:40 AM

There are different levels of voluntary contributions, but nothing mandatory. I would not respond.

Sounds Phishy

Is there a link provided? If so, hover your cursor over it, but DO NOT CLICK. Somewhere on your screen, maybe the lower left corner, you will see what you are about to link to.....probably not Club Cobra.

LMH 01-07-2014 12:36 PM

I haven't received anything like that. Contact Ron or Brent.
Larry

G-Pete 01-07-2014 01:43 PM

...probably for your forum subscription in Nigeria....

Bernica 01-07-2014 02:43 PM

Don't touch that link!
If you want to contribute here, just click at top right at "Become a Contributor"
I just renewed and it worked fine. Throw a little cash in the kitty. It all helps these guys keep the motor running!:D

I don't mind subscribing. Did it a few years ago. How do I contribute?

Cheers

I have not received anything like that, and would never expect to ,looks like spam to me.

1ntCobra 01-07-2014 07:10 PM

When you contribute, you get some privileges for extra space for pictures, a star or trophy and such. I think what this means is that if you stop contributing, you will no longer have your special privileges. I don't think they will remove us from the site.

I tend to go along with the spam believers. For one thing this phrase alone is not that you would just lose the extra space, "access will be removed." That is saying thet you sould be blocked from the site and I don't believe for a minute that Ron, Jamo, or Brent would send such a thing. They would send you something more informational than that. As suggested above, point at the link and look down in the lower left hand corner and see where it says it is going.

Ron

Ron,

I got the same email a couple days before my subscription was about to expire. I just went back and found the email in my deleted mail folder. If I hover over the link in the email, it shows me that the destination is club cobra. If it was spammers, how would they know that my subscription was about to expire in a couple of days? And they are silly spammers for sending me back to club cobra to make my payment. ;)

I just think the wording of the email could use some tweaking.

OK, my bad. This must just pertain to those who have the stars and stuff and maybe the site is set up to automatically send out that email. I think the intent then would be that you would just lose the extra space in your Albums and the other extra privileges that you gain as I can't believe they would kick you off the site since your donation was voluntary. Thanks for straighting me out as I was in error thinking it was spam.

The link brought me right to the Club Cobra web site and the section saying contribute or lose the extra benefits etc. etc.. It's something Brent et al generated here.

It use to be that the trophies, stars and the like indicated people that repeatedly contributed to the site, not how much photo memory there was. If you're going to generate this type of nonsense, at least tone down the language. The best way, in my humble opinion, to generate revenue for the web site is to run another donation drive. It's always worked well and never generated threatening e-mails.

BTW this is the whole e-mail

Dear 55312,

Your access to the paid subscription "Club Cobra Gold Star Contributor" is about to expire.

If you have selected a recurring subscription you will be automatically billed for the renewal, else to renew this subscription you must visit http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/payments.php

If you do not extend your subscription, access will be removed.

All the best,
Club Cobra

Tim

LMH 01-08-2014 07:04 AM

I don't think that's very harsh.
Don't read tone into text.
Larry

ChuckG 01-08-2014 02:58 PM

Tim, I agree with you. Rather harsh. Probably time to move CC to Facebook as the Club Cobra Facebook site and it would cost nothing.

Hydramada 01-09-2014 11:39 AM

I don't see anything "harsh" in that email. If you go to the subscription page it clearly states:

Thank you for considering the various different contribution methods at Club Cobra. While each provide more or otherwise enhanced features, the real purpose is to show support for the site and the moderators. The money will be utilized to support the monthly costs, long term expenses, and sharing with the moderator staff. We appreciate the support! As a contributor, you'll get an icon by your name in every post you make showing your contribution.

http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/payments.php

So subscribing is a way to support the website with a donation. All you are going to lose if you don't renew your gold member status is:

Large Avatar
200mb Space in Gallery
More Private Message Storage

You will still have complete access to the forums and the site itself.
