Default GPS Speedometer

The speedometer in my SPF has about had it, 5-7 mph off at 65, bounces, and the trip meter is busted.
I'm looking at either a Smith's electronic or Smith's GPS. I'm told my Tremec 600 is already set up for the electronic, although I have not put it up the rac to verify. Any issues with the Smith's electronic speeo.

Has anyone installed a a GPS speedometer. if so what issues have you had.

I would like to keep it a Smith's set up as that is what all the other gauges are, and would like to keep it consistent.

Varmit,

A couple of the people over on our site have used the GPS speedometer and seem to like it. I think some of the guys in South Africa are looking at it also. But so far there hasn't been enough feedback to really tell if it is a good thing or not.

Speedhut in Utah has a GPS speedo that is so simple. They can custom make your a face plate to match the gauges you have already.

I have been using a Speedhut GPS speedo in my Cobra for about 2 yrs now and am happy with it - only loses the signal occasionally for a few seconds but I think that has something to do with the location of the GPS aerial on the Front Roll bar brace just below the dashboard. It might also have something to do with the fact that I live in a Naval town with all sorts of electronic signals flying around???

Am planning to move the aerial higher up the brace when in the mood.

The one down side is that I have a battery cut-off switch so I lose power to it when parked, which means it takes a minute or so to initiate instead of almost instantaneous initiation if power is maintained to the unit.

I use Isspro gauges........the Speedo is calibratable.........I also have an app on
my phone that I use to check ......Digihud..........gives trips averages and records max attained top speed...

GPS signals are easily blocked so would have to experiment more to give definitive answer, but did try under dash when I initially installed the gauge and found that it lost signal more often than in it's current location - I could of tried a few more under dash locations but as it is virtually invisible in it's current location didn't try to find the optimum under dash location.

I don't run the lower windshield bracket on my car so I put the antenna right up against the windshield frame right in the center. Ran the wire under the gasket and dropped it down through the hole where the windshield goes through the body. seems to work just fine. I suppose you could put it off to one side or right in the corner.

I also thought about moving it down to the mouth opening above the oil cooler opening. Hell they give you a long enough lead to wrap it around the car twice...lol. That's a bit of a stretch but you get my drift.

I don't know much about them, but wouldn't it be better to go with an electronic speedometer vs. a GPS unit?

GPS is the way to go in my book. Nothing to calibrate. Wheel and tire size makes absolutely no difference. Gear changes, tranny changes makes no difference to the speedo. When I was looking at gauges I talked to quite a few guys that went the electronic route in the beginning. Then Made the change to GPS and couldn't be happier. So I went GPS from the start.

I was initially thinking of electronic, but have decided to go GPS. Really like the Speed Hut GPS Unit.

Thanks everyone for the input. Love the car but they like attention more than a jealous mistress!!!!

After looking at them, the GPS looks pretty cool. What's the part number needed to cap off the speedo cable for TKO-600?

Plug kit, Ford speedo hole (any ford slip-in style) Use to seal mechanical speedo opening on TKO transmission when electronic speedo is used.

Good choice varmit. I think you will be happy. The guys and gals at speedhut are great to deal with. Something to keep in mind as well. The rest of their gauges are awesome. They can even give you a separate circuit on the temp gauge to turn your electric fans on and off. So that means you don't have to run a separate thermistor if you want to cycle your fans. I have the full set of revolution gauges from speedhut and I could not be happier.

Default Car Craft Speedometer Article

In the May 2014 issue of Car Craft magazine, there is a pretty good article about electronic and GPS speedometers (page 78). Easy to spot on the rack, it has "LOW-BUCK ELECTRONIC GPS SPEEDOMETERS! p.78" across the top of the cover. I checked the website, but it hasn't made it there yet...only shows an add for an Autometer speedo as part of the Speed Parts info. (page 10 of the hardcopy).

My Smiths finally gave up the ghost, so I'm looking at GPS speedometers as an option.

It's been nearly 2 years since this thread. Anyone have any updates on how you like your GPS speedometers and/or recommendations on brands?

Besides all the qualities discussed above. The GPS will give you 0 to 60, 1/4 mile and top speeds. I'm glad I put one in. bob
