Cobra fatality

"Diane and Molly were at the lights with these guys, seconds before this fatal crash and took these shots. They were probably heading to the car show at Griffin Ford( Waukesha Wisconsin). The guy in the cobra was gunning it and did what they considered a hard right turn into the curb, over and into the ditch below. Diane called the cops right away. These were probably friends following one another to the show. Sad"

They were brothers

FATAL CRASH: Driver slams car into tree in Waukesha…was speed a factor? | FOX6Now.com

Very sad to hear. Cars can be replaced, family and friends not so much.
Been slowly building seat time getting ready for the season but taking it easy until the muscle memory is redefined. Surprising how much the pedals and switches moved during the off season.

Very sad,

RIP to whom it was.
FYI, a friend of mine was in a very similar accident with low speeds in an early SPF and the car was the only recipient of damage.

His right rear suspension gave way, think it was a bolt in type bracket, thus launching him to the right through a fence and into a tree. I never owned an SPF so I am not good with details.
Not picking on the manufacturer here just a FYI to check all rear suspension components as when they go nothing good comes of it. Think it was an older SPF and the fix was to weld the rear together, not sure if this car pictured was same generation. Not sure if SPF has addressed it?

Jeff, the problem you seem to be referring to related to the rear shock tower mounts. SPF improved on their original design, and Randall Thomas has developed a replacement shock tower mount that it a significant upgrade.

I'd be surprised if that was the problem in this case.

A revving engine and those BFG Radial T/As seem to me like a recipe for lost traction.

Regardless, it's a sad story and a tragic outcome.

My first thought was that he broke the right axle in a posi rear and the left rear wheel drove him to the right.

Tragic........................

I also support "No BFG's" on these cars...........

PatBuckley 05-05-2014 10:29 AM

Brothers.....that makes it even more tragic.

MOTORHEAD 05-05-2014 12:09 PM

Very sad. I'm not a fan of ls diffs, or BFG's, Got launched into and over a curb sideways early on before I changed tires. Was doing maybe 25 mph at the time ! It was instantaneous!! I was lucky it didn't go over. This poor guy not so lucky.
Condolences to the family.

Not BFGs, but still not soft compound, high traction tires. I have beat this drum before and everyone has their opinion about how they don't track their cars or they don't ever mash the loud pedal to the floor... blah, blah, blah...

The cheapest way to increase the REAL performance (including safety performance) of your Cobra is to put high performance tires on your high performance car. It amazes me the amount of money folks will put into engines, but not tires.

Having said that, my sincere condolences to those with loss.

gsharapa 05-05-2014 01:12 PM

HP and cold tires is not a good mix!

autokenny 05-05-2014 03:05 PM

Which hi-perf tire would you recommend?

dallas_ 05-05-2014 03:07 PM

That sucks. I hate hearing those stories. Our condolences to his family. :(

PatBuckley 05-05-2014 04:21 PM

Maybe it's just me, but this thread is about a fellow Cobra owner who just got killed in his Cobra - it seems to me that having it dissolve into a tire recommendation thread (or a thread about anything else) is pretty poor.

Jeez.

ItBites 05-05-2014 04:25 PM

autokenny,

I run Nitto NT01 tires. They provide a significant performance increase over BFGs or Avids, or whatever other passenger car, grocery getter tire many folks put on their 600hp Cobra fakeydoo.

Pat, you are right, bad form... I will post no more lecture discussions about tires here.

Again, my condolences.

Very tragic............. RIP

buddyg 05-05-2014 05:59 PM

From what I've read he had a medical event that caused his death and was uninjured in the accident. Most likely a heart attack but that's just a guess.

john chesnut 05-05-2014 06:21 PM

Very sad. RIP. I had a heart attack while driving my truck about 6 weeks ago. Fortunately I was able to pull over before becoming incapacitated. If my wife were not with me I might not have made it.

buddyg 05-05-2014 07:58 PM

Yikes how are you doing now?

Wow John! How are you now?

So sad about the accident. My condolences to the family.
