IL allowed me to have antique plates too. Just depends on how tough your state wishes to get.
Given mine was titled as a '65 there was no IL smog certification required and I was able to sell it to an overseas collector with ease.
Doubt Shelby really thought about any of this when he put together his continuation MSO as I'm sure the lawyers designed them.

In MO I registered mine as a '65 Ford Tudor and registered '65 plates with it.
I don't need yearly safety inspections or a front plate with the '65.
Be careful, a friend registered his as a '65 Ford Cobra and after owning it a few years, the state decided they weren't charging enough taxes for a Shelby Cobra (they didn't ask) and raised his taxes SIGNIFICANTLY. Typical government, he had to prove it wasn't worth what they assessed it at.

Chicago,
You are correct about the lawyers framing the MSO
The trademark "Shelby" implies it is not just another cobra kit car.
Some states buy it, some don't.

My 2007 Hurricane SC 427 roadster is registered as a 1965 Ford. The DMV or MVD as it's called in Arizona told me I could call it whatever I wanted.... 65 Ford good enough.
Shoot, in AZ you can register a gas powered shopping cart as a Lambo, Humvee or whatever meets your fancy.
Great State, not much BS from the government. Oh, biggest problem is sometimes I have to check my gun in at certain bars.

Mine is registered as '09 Custom per NYS regulations. I now help fellow owners through the potentially confusing NYS process. There are plenty of horror stories out there, but with proper planning and communication, it is smooth sailing!
Here is thread detailing the NYS process.

In 94 registered our car as 1965 Cobra the VIN number solidifies the fact that the car is a replica. Remember back then it had something to do with the engine because of emissions.

Help identify my cobra manufacturer!!!
Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place. Just hoping someone can help!
I was hoping you could help me figure out who manufactured this cobra replica that I have. I bought it from a guy who originally bought it to make a jig out of it. All I have is the VIN number that was on the frame. It is VR101502PR01R
Do you have any idea? Or could you direct me to someone who does? I am new to forums and relatively new to cobras. Any help would be appreciated!!
