Not when you open the block drains then fill through the temp sender and the overflow tank. Each is on opposite sides of the thermostat.

Pat,

How often do you flush and fill? Once a year? I plan to do that this fall as it has not been done yet.

Phil

Every two seasons as a maximum. Three is adequate. Watching the condition of the hoses is more important.

I agree with that... and I don't have the little block drain petcocks. I have to do it the old fashioned way....:(. But I do crack the temp sensor to let air out of the manifold. Regardless, it's a PITA no matter what way you cut it.

Large Arbor 07-26-2014 08:15 PM

Excellent. I just went out and checked levels and I needed a quart of antifreeze. I have never seen it leaking out but it must have been squirting out through the overflow hose. It was good I checked.

... and I use a 50/50 mix of distilled water and AutoZone Conventional Green Antifreeze.

Now you'll leave puddles on the garage floor.

Jamo 07-26-2014 08:19 PM

distilled water and waterwetter

Large Arbor 07-26-2014 08:21 PM

I will give that a shot when I flush in the fall. I have heard lots of FE Aluminum owners running distilled water and water wetter. I would do that, but every fall would have to flush and refill with anti freeze. Ohio sucks in the winter.

You should fill the block there, not just burp the system. That and the tank are the highest parts of the system.
Nothing should be a PITA for you-you have a lift. Petcocks are pennies and even you couldn't fudge-up installing them.

Large Arbor 07-26-2014 08:24 PM

As I was typing Jamo posted. I have heard the distilled water and water wetter works best. Perhaps I will do that next summer. The garage was a cool 24 degrees last winter with a heater running. I need to pull a 220 feed to get a more efficient heater. I have that to do. Just not enough time in a day.

ERA Chas 07-26-2014 08:33 PM

Phil-Jamo lives in paradise where you don't need AF.
Don't run plain water. You said you don't get over 200 (that can't be right) so you don't need water's heat transfer.
You need winter protection and the raised boiling point of a mix. Use AF and distilled because of your ally radiator. And yellow AF has not hurt my system in 27 years.
Beware of myths and wives tales told by The Oracle...

Large Arbor 07-26-2014 08:44 PM

ERA Chas -I know Jamo lives in paradise. However, 200 is about as high as I have seen it get and that was stuck in traffic at 90 degrees. As soon as I get on the road, drops back down to 180 and stays there. I run a puller fan and leave it on all the time. I will try to pay more attention to the max temp when its shut off, but I don't think its been much higher. It may have to do with my driving habits as I don't like sitting in traffic and not moving. It could also be that I cruise more than continuously hammer. I am still getting used to it as this is the first summer with it.

Pat- Yes, it may now leave a small spot on the floor.

Related question: Does a coolant recovery system meet the track requirement of "no fluid discharge", and is there any reason why this could not be installed on an FE ? If I'm going to install a can in the eng compartment anyway, why not go the extra couple of steps and go recovery system ?

Amazing that a simple little thread about a sprinkles bottle can generate this many posts. And just go on and on and on....
