Coolant Overflow Catch Can (small version)

A fellow FE powered Cobra owner asked me what I did to make sure Ellie stayed away from the occasional small puddle of coolant that an FE will, from time to time, spritz out the overflow tube upon parking after a hard run. Aside from the fact that Ellie is too fat to fit under the Cobra unless it's jacked up, the cats are not -- and they both have a sweet tooth. I sent him a picture of my overflow catch bottle.

You must be having another bad day....:(

FWB 07-25-2014 09:22 AM

i do something similar when i go to the dragstrip.
i use a small soda bottle....melt a hole in the cap, screw in a hose nipple
and hose clamp it on.....a couple tie wraps to hold the bottle.

you can empty it with a unscrew of the bottle leaving the cap clamped to the hose

Well, don't tell ACademic... he's liable to unleash his pomposity on you.

In my misspent youth, an empty soda can got me to pass tech at the local drag strip. Your solution isn't elegant, but I'll give you points for being functional. :3DSMILE:

i keep my duct tape on my sneaker.
and my chewing gum is always on my wifes forehead........so i can easily find it again

ERA Chas 07-25-2014 10:12 AM

Right up there with AC foam on the roll bar (s) and a hardware store clutch spring.

I may have a pic somewhere but a Moroso 1 quart black canister with petcock to drain it is hooked to my tank's, road tube. A must for NHRA and simple for maintenance. On ERA's, fits neatly to frame at lower right corner of rad with 2 large worm clamps.

My picture looks deceiving. The bottle is actually quite small -- and, in fact, it is a plastic "sprinkles" bottle. You know, the little multicolored candy sprinkles that you put on top of ice cream? But, out of curiosity, just how much coolant would your engine normally put in to the 1 qt. Moroso?

rodneym 07-25-2014 10:54 AM

You know, you could have used an empty bottle of nail polish.
I mean, 332 FEs don't puke that much :o

BTW, we're laughing with you, not at you.

Do you remember those little glass Testor paint bottles we had as kids and we used them on models? Not a whole lot bigger than the end of your thumb? That's about all I really need. She doesn't spit out much at all.

rodneym 07-25-2014 11:17 AM

If that's the case, then that's great.
And yes, Testor's Enamel. The beginning to my life long battle with paint.

They even offer sand beige to match your exterior. Why not go all in?!?

ya know that bottle can double as pee bottle too when you just don't have the time to stop.....:3DSMILE:

Well done Patrick...seems to fit what folks would've done in the 60s!

We used to use a Tecate bottle vineyard wired to the tube and radiator upright on our old sulfer buggy...bare car chassis and motor, bench seat, ugly assed welded irrigation furrow pipe for a temp gauge and steering column to hang from...tractor gas tank and sulfer machine out back. Think of it as a really ugly sand rail. Just hauled butt down the vineyard rows to keep ahead of the sulfur blowing out. Look at a vineyard row next time you get a chance...damn tough to keep an overpowered-vague steering-on junkyard tires farm implement like that moving straight.

My early Bronco has an MJB coffee can screwed into the firewall. The first owner was a lineman for SoCal Edison up in the Sierra west of here...kept a quart of oil, some coolant and an old red rag in it. When I was buying it and pointed it out, the old man, serious as can be, told me he liked MJB but I could use any other brand's can I wanted to.

I must correct 'M's' statement-MAKE NO MISTAKE-WE ARE LAUGHING AT YOU.
To answer your question; depends on how hot the day and how hard the drive.
But it took a few weeks in the dead of summer to get it nearly full.

ERA Chas 07-25-2014 02:46 PM

Here is the part-why not get a big-boy part rather than your usual kitchen table specials?

Without going through 10,000 pics I can show you where it lives. It's a batch to photo because of location but here, you can just see the black body with band clamp peeking out. Right past where the overflow pipe leaves the tank. That hose connects to it:

I'm going to be brutally honest. I'll have to agree with AC's sentiment. Wow. Seriously, you're WAY better than that.

Notwithstanding what I think, that's also far more than I could ever physically do considering my poor technical and engineering skills.

That's a lot of coolant. What sort of temperature were you showing?:( And I can't even see the tank on your photo. %/ And I didn't even read RodKnock's post.
