Anyone brush existing polished ally?

Now that I'm powder coating the quickjacks and roll bar, I'd like to seriously consider brushing my polished stripes. I like the brushed stripes on brushed body look.

Who has ever brushed over a polished finish?
I'm considering wet sanding with an 400 grit, to get a nice but subtle contrast to the body.
Since this will be irreversible, to me anyway, I'd appreciate some input.
Polishing is just so...not my style.
I'm horrible at it.
