Tire dressing
Have been using a tire dressing to keep the tires looking new (low sheen, not shiney ) but recently I've noticed a brownish coating on them that does not come off easily, but it will come off if I rub it with my finger or a cloth, but in ribbed or lettering areas it is difficult to remove. I'm thinking it must be the tire dressing causing this (yellowing) .
Don't know the chemical make-up of what I'm using, but must be silicone or ???. Anybody have similar experience with this problem? If not, what are you using that doesn't give you any problems? I'll post some pics later. |
This happens with EVERY type of dressing I've tried, and I've tried all the good boutique stuff, too. My solution: No More Tire Dressing. If you can start with fresh tires and never apply dressing you will never get that leeching white or brown stuff. Just keep them clean with an occasional scrub with simple green or other degreaser. They will stay black and not shiny. Best of all, no ugly leeching out.
If you already have several applications of layered dressings from over the years you will have to repeatedly scrub and degrease them over several lashings over time. It is not easy, so the best solution is to never apply that stuff in the first place. |
My theory is that it's a nautral build up of oxidation and road grime that accumulates and needs to be cleaned off periodically to get back down to clean rubber. I'm sure I'm not alone in giving my tires a quick wipe with a sponge and soapy water when washing the car and then applying more dressing over the top of what the quick swipe with a sponge left on the tire. What has always worked good for me for cleaning tires is 409and a brush, but need to be careful about getting it off of paint and wheel surfaces pretty quickly.

Purple power diluted or full strength in a spray bottle......just spray the whole wheel and wash with a hose and brush. I don't use any dressing and just keep the tyres clean......they still shine..

Griot's makes a good rubber prep that strips and cleans pretty well. They also have several tire dressings...

Now that I think about it, when I use the tire cleaner on my other vehicles, (Bleach white, I think) the white foam spray changes to a brownish color as soon as it hits the rubber, so maybe the same reaction takes place with the dressing but takes longer? I haven't tried a tire cleaner on the Cobra tires as I don't like getting them wet (see rust starting between wheel and hub when wheel is removed) but I'll try it to see if it removes whatever is on the tire. If that doesn't work, I'll try the previously suggested cleaners.

This is the best stuff I have found. Cleans, protects and gives them that "new" look, not the "shiny wet look".....

Oh yeah, I bought some of that (303)many years ago. Haven't seen it since, thought they went under. I'll see if i can find some.

I had that on my tires also. It is the UV protection in the tire coming tot he top of the rubber. Some cleaners and "protectants" make it a lot worse. The more you use, the tougher it becomes to remove it.
I bought tire cleaner and scrubbed the heck out of them. You cannot get real strong stuff or again, it will continue to pull the UV protectant out. I use Chemical Guys. It has been on the tire for almost 2 years now and you can just rinse the dirt off and the tires look like new. Tire Dressing
I have tried many types over the years with mixed results. I have been using the Griots Tire and Rubber product for a couple of years now. It is not greasy, not too shiny, and does not come off onto the paint behind the tires.

Vinylex by Lexol also does a good job.

Aerospace 303 for me. And I buy in bulk on amazon (and Mothers Showtime Detailer) at half to a third the price of the auto store prices.

Ultima Tire and Trim Guard Plus is great also Lanes Super Blue Tire Gloss. Both satin finish and last for months.

Will that Aerospace 303 make the "brown" letters white again? I made the mistake of spraying Sparkle window cleaner on my tires to clean them and the black turned white.
Put some wizard tire stuff on them and got the black back but have been afraid to put anything else on them and now the white letters are disgusting. They are Eagle GT2's. Thanks, Russ |
