Default My winter project.

OK. I know we don't get winter on California's Central Coast (it's 75 deg today).

So i guess I've just got too much time on my hands. My project is to scratch build a Ford 9" IRS.

A few pics attached as I get started with the center section. Using circle track a-arms(slightly modified) (pics to come), GM cv axles and 1985 Buick Riviera uprights and brakes. Probably sounds like a strange combo, but it's coming together.

Cheers
Greg

Thanks Paul. Started with a mid 60's style Ford 9" axle housing center (off e-bay) and cut the housing down flush with the sides of the center section. Then welded in Ford "small bearing" housings into the sides of the center section.

Used a cool axle alignment tool made by Leadmine Products to align the bearing housings while welding.

I'm starting with cut down Lefthander Chassis/Chester Racing Products GN axles (24 spline outer with a bearing/seal surface to accept Ford axle bearings).

The axle flanges are GN 24 spline axle flanges which will be final machined to provide the necessary clearances to the housing.

In one of the pics you'll see a chrome tube , simply joining the two axles together, but is not part of the final assy.

Now comes the harder part. Adding the 31 spline ends to the stub axles.

I have been in close contact with a number of axle manufacturers, and although the common wisdom is that axles cannot be welded, they say with proper annealing , skilled TIG welding and proper re-heat treating, it can be properly done.

So the next step is to complete the axles.

Then a simple 1/2" thick alum disc, to act as an adapter and centering device, will join the CV axle flange and brake disc to the GN axle flanges on the Ford 9" center.

Should have more progress and pics over the next few weeks.

Cheers
Greg

Cool project! The old Hi Techs used a modified 9" housing in the IRS rear ends, unless you opted for a 4HU diff.

Like it. All but the inboard brakes. I had a Jag with them and they were difficult to work on.

More progress ( I'm a slow worker) on my Ford 9" IRS home build project. Here are a few pics:

More pics later this week with upper crossmember, brake calipers and a-arms.

Cheers
Greg
