You can't order a ABC ### (three alpha followed by three numerals) plate because the DMV views that sequence as already been used (from the 60's). Lots of original black plate cars still registered and on the road here, so some vanity choices will be denied.

I have a new style white personalized plate. Can I purchase a black plate version of this same personalized plate?

Hi Pat, my first thought was to go with KMP185, but then went with KM427SC to assist with "is it real" questions. I really just wanted a black version of what I had, but it wouldn't let me do that (REALKMP).
I just realized, it's been ten years now since I bought your car! Going on 19,000 smiles.

It will be interesting to see what effect the new black plates might have on the values of the originals. Currently, vintage black plates are selling for roughly $200 -300 on eBay, and the CA DMV allows owners of '63-'69 cars to retrofit them. The new plates will be visually similar but not exactly alike, nor will they use the same type of character sequence that enables one to date a car by its plates. Hence it will be apparent which cars are using the reproduction plates vs. the originals. And it strikes me, that probably wasn't the intent of the program at all.

Didn't even cross my mind, I haven't had a black plate since 1963..... On my '58 Triumph TR3.

Randy,
I have the same question. I tried to input my personal plate online but of course it says it's not available.
There's got to be a way to make an exchange.

Rodknock,
Did you have to go to the DMV?

I've read the new Black and Yellow plates are reflectorized. I'm not sure how vintage they will look, but like the idea a lot. Anybody seen the final product yet?

I haven't had to go in yet. I just mailed them my request/order form and a check. Some time back. I'll have to go into a DMV office to pick up the new black/gold plates (and calendar stickers) and turn in my old personalized plates.

The black plates were mailed to me and they arrived today. I did not go to
the DMV and I see no directive to "turn in" my old plates. The new black
plates are on my car now. The yellow paint used for the letters and numbers
is the only thing reflective and in the daylight you can't tell. The plates are
made at Folsom Prison from the original 1960s dies. The word "California"
is raised, as are the letters and numbers...same as the "original" 60s plate.
A replica plate for a replica car...now I wonder if I'll get questions about that.
Is that a real Cobra? Is that a real 60's black plate? Are you wearing a wig?
Are your girl friend's tits real? No you moron, I'm a replicant and she is a
blow-up doll.

Kit, you never should have sold that nice 260 car. It would look good today cruising La Jolla Blvd.

My notice said they'll notify me about pickup and, when you order personalized plates, they make you turn in old sequential plates. I'm surprised they let you keep the old ones. But hey, that's fine by me.
