At a cruise in overheard two men commenting: "that's a homemade Cobra using a VW Vanagan floor pan" (F5). Just wow! I'm speechless...

How about this one:

Long, long time ago there was a "cruise night" once a month and I'd go when the weather was nice....I met this guy there, super nice guy,he had a very early F5 car, number 46 or 47, the "so called" bad bodies....anyhow, it was a standard by the book build, white w/blue stipes, probably had 20,000+ miles on it and a pretty good crack in the passenger front fender that he covered up with a racing decal........
He was parked next to a trailer queen/show car/almost never driven absolutely perfect Superformance with less than 400 miles on it......it was not only perfect,it was spotless inside and out and everywhere......

As the night goes on,you'd get a group of guys come walking by,you know the type and there is always one guy in the group that is an expert on whatever they are looking at......so these guys come by and they are standing between the 2 cars and the expert loudly proclaims the F5 is an original Cobra and the Superformance is a replica........

Couldn't help myself as myself the owners of the 2 cars were standing nearby, I had to ask the expert to point out to me how he could tell this.......

he said the Superformance had to be a replica cause it had less than 400 miles on it and was and I quote: "TOO PERFECT".....o-k,I said, what about the other car: he said the seats/carpet showed wear and were faded as one would expect, the odometer showed 50 something thousand miles,it had rock chips and a few scratches here and there as one would expect and it just looked like an original to him......

No sooner they left, the Superformance owner went and got his enclosed trailer and brought it nearby, loaded up and left in a cloud of dust......the F5 owner and I had a good laugh about the whole episode......F5 owner could have cared less what anyone thought of his car, he built it to drive and enjoy and that is what he did, it was less than perfect and he didn't care one bit....it had the stock Mustang gauges/EFI engine and was never very clean other than a good wipe down of the car.......

I enjoy these guys stories just as much as the amazing stories from the legends or someone who has great info to share. Its all part of the experience and memories being created. Its all passion...

I know someone who used to own an absolutely beautiful bright yellow ERA who pretty much did the same thing when he lost to an equally beautiful HOK painted FFR. He got so upset that he made a big stink and left in the middle of trophy presentations, revving his motor loud enough so others could not hear the announcer. Then left the property spinning his tires............I heard he sold the car not long after and ordered a CSX continuation series

Everyone knows the Vanagan Cobras handle like a ripe banana at speed...the good kits are based on the ultra reliable Ford Pinto!

Mate, you are in rare form - You're last half dozen posts have been just stellar!
Nudging the bear rather than aggressively poking it.... I'm shamelessly love it!

Good one, had not thought of that.......but no, neither I nor the F5 owner knew these guys, they were just a bunch of guys walking the lot at a cruise night.......

but it was funny as all get out at the time.........

and to be truthful, the F5 with it's scratches and wear and tear did look closer to a 40 something year old original than the sparkling Superformance.....

Matter of fact, the engine/trans in the Superformance cost more than the whole F5,I think that is the part that pi$$ed off the Superformance owner more than anything.......

When I had my other Cobra which was raced and driven hard and had all kinds of chips and things wrong with it, I took it to a car show some ways from here. Some guy with a very nice, far nicer than mine, parked right beside me. Some of the people were looking at mine and at the pipes and headers and I finally asked them what they were looking for. They said they wanted to be sure it was driven and they were tired of the show cars that were only driven on and off trailers. The guy with the really nice one came unglued and started yelling at the crowd about his car was far superior to that piece of junk and he drove his. He has almost 75 miles on the speedometer and I had well over 5K at that time. He left very angry and upset. I never won either as I know mine wasn't a show car and I was just there for the fun and to see the other cars.
