Default Peroid Correct License Plates

Ive done this for years on my classic cars so i thought id share it as some may not be aware of it.

In Florida up to the late 70s ( i think), plates were issued by year and county of residence. Each county have an assigned number of 1 through 67. Currently in Florida you can have an older tag authenicated and registered to place on your classic car if the year of the tag and car are the same. I was told that they cant be restored as thats an issue but ive heard of some who have done it and still gotten them authenicated and registered. Its kinda of a neat throwback in my opinion of you have the year tag if your car and the county you live in correct.

This is my current tag on my 65 BDR. While my Chevelle and Bronco have my correct county, the "90" preface was some sort of speciality tag and not a county issued.

Not sure what other states allow but its way cooler than the standard antique tags...

They are real state issued plates. You can find them on ebay pretty easy.

A friend of mine is one of the largest license plate collectors in the world. He sells a lot on ebay but if you are looking for something specific, I would be happy to make the connection. He gave me a great set of 1965 NH plates for my Cobra for Christmas. Now I need to make sure this is my actual 0-60 time...

Hopefully most states will allow them to be used. Luckily Florida is pretty easy going as long as you write them a Check!!!! : )

Nice looking plates. Some states won't allow them on replicas, restricting them to cars for the year they were manufactured. Here's a general outline for each state, but check local requirements anyway, U.S. Year of Manufacture License Plate Law Guide from TurnerPlates.com

Regarding period Florida plates, the number was based on the population of the county, Dade # 1, Broward #2, Pinellas #3 and so on. The letter W had to do with the registered weight of the vehicle. A Cobra would only have had the county number, no letter, the W meant it was a full sized vehicle and then there was WW, really heavy. The letter, let police see stolen plates that didn't match the car, like a W on a small sports car. With increasing population in the Orlando area this system was dropped in favor of the county name appearing on the plates.

Unless your car is titled as a 1965, I'm surprised they allowed that. Alabama (where I live) allows vintage plates on vintage cars, but not on replicas.

New Hampshire does this too.
All you do is have your regular registration, old plates and about $8 bucks.
Does require the painful trip to registry which is why mine are still on the wall.

That's a cool plate. Unfortunately New Jersey's vintage plates look the same as the current plates except for color in some cases.

New Jersey only has plates stamped "Historic" that look basically the same as all the other plates. Your car must be over 25 years old to qualify.

Karl in AZ you can get them for the year of manuf. I tried to use one of the '70s era copper/green plates for mine but was restricted to 1965 plates.

Alabama allow you to use a state issue (old) tag for vintage cars. It must be the same year as the car. One time charge of $12.

There is a company that will rebuild your beat up rust tag to look like new for $100.

Here is my collection of tags issued in the county that I live in.

Tim's tag on his Unique

Coach Mike's tag on his Unique

After my car was done realized the plate would have to hang down over the trunk latch. No way that was going to happen so I downsized the plate to 3/4 size took it to a sign shop the new plate "replica" has the same reflective material as the state plate. It has been on the car since the early 90's and certainly has drawn a lot of attention.
