I'm currently building a TA2 type track car with a D3 Ford.
It will wear a AR Mustang body. 2400 lb. With 800 up and full tube chassis,quickchange,t101a,and all safety gear. It will be fun. |

Racing is all about traction - tires and set-up (Suspension and aero included).
Driver skill is a distant third to the two above. There are plenty examples of this. In regards to old vs new (458 Italia vs Kirkham): Its been done... Well sort of. No twisty bits on the track but hey... But... since you're mentioning/comparing drag capabilities of a much modified Cobra to a stock Ferrari lets compare apples to apples. I've several buddies that have heads/cam/intake Z06s that are V-E-R-Y streetable w/no power adders (nitrous or boost) and still running a hydraulic roller cam that are turning 9.80s and 9.90s @ 140+ through the quarter. Now... if you really want to get wild there's a guy with an 08 Z06 that won the LSX street car shootout last year (as I recall) with a 5.19 @ 223. :rolleyes: |

I still think many sell the originals (and close replicas) short on track potential. Keep in mind that these were very competent track cars by design. Add some modern brakes, up the power, correct a few suspension issues, modern rubber, and fix a few glaring aerodynamic issues and you still have a nearly unbeatable combination of light weight, minimal frontal area, big power, and minimal moa. Add a bolt in cage with a proper seat and you will be as stiff and safe as any modern production car and still be fine for the street with it removed.
I wouldn't have the heart to cut up anything as nice as any CSX or Kirkham, but hacked up an FFR with a clean conscience. Some of the replicas have much more track potential than others so choose wisely if you want respectable lap times. One thing I fully agree with, and that is that it's not wise to go anywhere near 10/10ths with the standard roll bar. No need to get killed over a hobby. The question to me is: When you buddy is spanking you in his new Z06, will you be capable of holding it to 8/10ths? If not, you need something that will protect you in a crash. |
