Some oil dripping from here
Just noticed after driving for bit today, maybe 15 miles or so, when i came back there was some oil coming from underneath. Not a lot, just a few drips but as a mechanical noob, i thought i'd ask if this is unusual.

if I recall right, you have an FE, check up around the top of the intake manifold at the ends for any leaks. FE's are notorious for oil leaks around the intake manifold ends and around the valve covers. I would look at that first before thinking about a rear seal. |

I see you have already taken the appropriate action!
Oil will run to the lowest point when sitting, and the lowest ,rearmost point when moving forward. Visually check everywhere on the engine. Usual suspects are valve covers, intake to block and head joints, hoses, and pipe plugs. Worst case scenario is rear main crank seal. Pull the engine/tranny type repair. But try every thing else first ! Best procedure is to wash down engine to remove exsisting oil & grime, but you must be very thorough to avoid false readings, and get a dye ck kit.

Looks like its at the intake manifold. Valve covers feel dry and both have new gaskets installed when i got it. Here's what i saw....

That looks like you have taken a pic of the passenger side corner of where the bellhousing is bolted up to the block plate. If so, that is the most common point for oil dribbles on an FE. The reason has to do with how FE heads/Intake Manifolds/Blocks mate up. If the next day, after a sporty drive, you have less than a fifty cent sized puddle of oil on the floor then you should just learn to live with it and love it. Anything more than that and you can spend a little time sealing up the offending spots with RTV. |

Dead-nuts correct patrick. Passenger side. Puddle is even less than fifty cent piece. I can easily live with that. Will get some RTV to keep on hand.

If you search around the forum, you'll see plenty of comments like "It's an FE, it's supposed to leak", or "It wouldn't be normal if it didn't leak". Probably even see "An FE was designed to leak". Although some guys have managed to have a dripless FE, I think that's the minority...
So, probably nothing to worry about.

Over the years I have gotten my drip (in the identical spot as Mils) down to a dime sized puddle that only appears about half the time. For an FE that is Sahara Desert Bone Dry. |
