Bill, does the body need to slide back a little? That would make it closer to the square tubing. It definitely will need a solid mount to hold the striker in place.

For what it's worth, when it gets frustrating, best thing to do is leave it be for a couple days. It happens for sure to everyone. Besides, you'll spend those days thinking about how to work out this problem anyway. But everybody needs a break now and then!
