You don't need to mess with the body if you mount them on the windscreen. You can always undo it, no harm no foul. Plus, with the bulging rear fenders, the higher up, the better.

Even up on the windshield side post I still see the rear wheel hump in about the lower third of the mirror. I don't know how I could see anything out of one mounted on the front fender in the standard location. But it would depend on your height and seating position also.

That was my experience. With the mirrors on the fenders the rear fenders dominated the view, pretty much to the point of useless. I mounted a pair of bullet mirrors on the windshield pillars and, while I can still see them in the mirrors, they're tucked away in one corner of the field of view. Much better.
