Default Shifter dilema

I currently have the factory Ford 4 speed shifter and linkage on a top loader trans. I have put new bushings, springs, and bolts in the shifter base and it is still pretty sloppy. The reverse lockout is also really loose. What are some other options others are using? I want to keep the original shift handle if possible, but on a different shifting mechanism. Any thoughts would be helpful.

You can buy a Hurst shifter and modify your Ford handle to bolt to it or buy a Ford style handle with the shifter. Several Toploader Transmission specialists stock them.

Sounds exactly like what I am looking for. Anybody using this setup? It will be interesting to find out if the reverse lockout actually works.

I ran the Hurst Comp + shifter with mustang stick on a new rebuilt toploader. To me the best shifter on the planet for feel and smooth operation. Reverse has a strong spring lockout not needed in my opinion on the Hurst shifter.

It's a great set-up. My Toploader and Hurst shifter (w/Cobra handle) shifts better than my Corvette's Muncie with Hurst shifter that I always thought was the gold standard. Reverse lockout moves like original but does nothing. Reverse is protected by a strong spring detent.

I actually bought mine slightly used off of a forum member who was changing to a Tremec. But I think it's an ERA unit (came off another ERA) and I don't know if they modify and assemble everything in house at ERA or get them from an outside source.

Dan Williams no longer makes his shifters so I will buy the Hurst shifter body and rods and then look for a handle to fit the Hurst shifter. It looks like the 427 shifters for the T5 should bolt up to the Hurst. Anybody tried this yet?
