Default VDO electronic speedo bounces

My electronic VDO speedo is bouncing from 20 t0 50 then down to 0 then back to 50 up to 100 then down to 40. What do I need to do to fix it?

Did it ever work correctly? If not, I would first check the gauge grounds, then replace the transmission sender.

It's more likely to be the gauge, but I'd first check that the wiring is intact, including power (and ground) to the gauge and the connection to the sender.

If you have the one that you can adjust by just driving a mile, then check your three leads to the speedometer from the transmission. I had that same problem with mine and the trigger lead had gotten loose. I ran three new leads and never had a problem after that.

Mine did that too - until I put in a dedicated ground wire from the alternator to the external voltage regulator, as well as cleaning up some other grounds in the car - including the main ground from the battery to the frame.

BTW, I had flickering lights at idle that were diminished but not completely eliminated by the work I did on various ground points. Replacing the 1G alternator with a 3G alternator eliminated the idle flicker, plus a significant reduction in voltage drop when the cooling fans cut in. I would highly recommend a 3G alternator swap, unless you need the period correct look of the 1G alternators.

Does this happen only when moving, or while stationary?

I would back out the signal wire, if it still does it over bumps etc, then the signal wire is getting falsing triggered, or is shorted to ground etc somewhere in the wiring. If the speedo stays on zero, then the wiring is ok.

Then start looking at the speed sensor, drive/driven gears etc.
