Question Spam, What's the point?

Somebody explain to me what the point of going through the steps to sign up for a forum and just spam it? I don't get it. Is there a reason or something to gain?

What can we do to reduce it ?

There is a function to 'report'posts, but does this help the admins at all ?

I've wondered the same thing... but I do think reporting it helps. They seem to typically get reported immediately and the post gets removed... but in many cases the thread remains... taking up quite a few spaces on the "active threads" list as a result.

I was just wondering what the point of doing it is? They don't appear as a hack. It looks to me like someone signs up just to spam. You have to be a member to post.

The strange thing is how do they create a thread with no content?
In other words, replying to one becomes the first post, before you can report it.

There is not a human being behind this, but a "spam bot", a computer who's sole life is to probe forums software and post links. It boils down to the same thing that spam callers looking for a sucker to bite on their "apple" (so to speak), all it takes is one click on a link enclosed by an unsuspecting end user, and a click through profit has now been made. 1-2 cents at a time. Sometimes it's just getting that link out to the web so web bots such as google and many others grab it and archive it. Again, times it by a million such posts in a 24 hour day, and you start to see the profit center emerge.

Agreed.
Moderators....are the offending threads able to be deleted?

Cheers,

Ditto, on xb-60. Anything more, we as members can do to stop this silliness?

The problem is that you have to click on the post to be able to report it. If you mouse over the heading you can see it is spam without opening it.

Every few months, some of you ask the same damn questions...

There are several folks who get it...and instead of wasting time b!tching about it, they help me by reporting the spams and I generally delete them within minutes when I'm online and not working. The others get deleted within a few hours. When someone reports it, I look everywhere else and delete dozens because they come in swarms (see Mustang's post). I really appreciate the help of these folks...it truly helps me.

Don't want advice from any of you nerd-types...I'm not the owner/administrator, and frankly I don't give a damn.

Repeated questions about how to report spam may be treated as spam. Look at the top of the Cobra Talk page...there's a sticky.

The threadstarter here asked a valid question, but some folks just can't read.

Don't like my response? I don't care.

Have a nice day.
