I don't remember seeing the commercial but it sure is funny.

Thanks,

That was interesting. I drove one of the AMX cars with the 390 a time or two and they were fast. I think the fact they were by Rambler hurt them so far as sales go.

I wish I could find the Supercharged Javelin commercial. Father yells out to the the Mom "come see how your son butchered his car" and the son says "Dad I only made it better"

Love it, just love it. I've always had a soft spot for the underdog. Came oh so close to buying a 390, 4-speed "Scrambler" back in the late 70's. Look that car up. Cheers Tom.

Fondly remember the old TransAm series with the Fords, Mercury Cougars, Dodge Challenger, Camaro and Javelins. What an amazing time watching these cars piloted by names like Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, Swede Savage, Jerry Titus and Mark Donahue. Unfortunately the Javelin was the only AMC to have any success in road course use, the AMX did see the drag strip though.

In 1968 I test drove an AMX 390/4 speed. Yes, it was very quick and drove great or at least it was quite a bit more agile than my '61 Impala. I opted for a '65 Mustang. The price tag of a new car did not fit well with a high school senior or maybe it was the orange/black and white checkered looking interior.

My father had a 1973 AMC Ambassador Brougham with a 401 and it was quite a nice car. It compared very favourably with my friends' parents' cars at the time both in terms of luxury appointments and (when I got my grubby hands on it) performance. Some of the neighborhood girls actually liked it and I don't think "Jaws" ever lost an impromptu race to any of my buddies. My mom nicknamed it Jaws because one time after my dad bought a Toyota SUV the Ambassador sat in the driveway for a week with the hood propped open waiting for a new water pump

AM came to my High School to use our Quad (we had a very modern circular 3 story building with all glass and steel in California) as a photo shoot location for the new AMX. I was a sophomore and just getting my license. At one point they used several of us students as "extras" for the shoot. Never saw the photos used as an ad. But left me with a soft spot for the car. Wondered why they never installed the 401 motor into the car during the cubic inch wars.

I have a 401 in my 1978 Jeep J10 and that is one strong engine. Had to rebuild it do to a bad crank bearing and put a scat crank in it partly because it was such and old and rare engine that there were no stock cranks available.

You could get a 401 in 1971 and later if I recall. The 2 seater versions (70 and earlier) only had a 390 as this was AMC's largest engine. 401 was 71 and later.

@ joyridin' Yes you're right, back in 71, a friend in high school (Rich parents) brought him a new "Mark Donohue Ed." Javelin with a 401. Fun, fun car.
