Default Ford 427 FE 530hp fuel pump

My supplier has supplied an Airtex electric fuel pump E84070N. It puts out 72 GPH which I’m worried is low. Is anybody else successfully using this pump with a similar engine output?

It is free flow, not enough for my liking.

72 GPH free flow, min 4psi, max 5.75 psi.

No good for a decent fuel system feeding a Holley 4 barrel, or Webers, unless on a baby motor.

Thats a 72gph free flow pump.
Exact copy of a Carter P4070. Which I run. Never had an issue with a Carter pump, Holley and Quick Fuel I don't trust after experiencing failures.

The Carter design hasn't changed much at all since WWII.

You should be fine running a SBF with that pump.
This article has the formulas if you'd the calc the exact requirements though.

Perhaps you should fit a dash mounted fuel pressure gauge with the sender at the carb inlets, and check your fuel pressure at your hp peak?

Your should also consider what size i/d line runs from the pump to the carbs.

And then volume test in car.

Default Fuel volume

You will never use that much fuel at that HP level.per hour even with a very poor BSFC typical of FE engines.

You fuel pump is more than enough for 530 hp.

The max you would need is 186 liters per hour and your 72 gallons per hour pump will deliver 272.55 per hour.

You are good to go!

So allowing for fuel line loss, fuel filters, pickup strainer etc, doesn't leave a lot of leeway.

What size fuel line are we using here?

Thanks guys for the esteemed responses which I appreciate. It seems I’m good to go, despite the fact that many have higher outputs. Thanks. I will try and post some pix of the work to date.

The same as the pump, 3/8” bore.

If you drove the car at max hp (maybe 5,500 rpms) then you might run out of fuel for a long time.
Fuel filters are a big blockage.

My buddy had three fuel filters on his Coupe. When he got on it hard it would run out of fuel in the top of second gear.
He removed one of the filter and it would spin to 6,200 in first four gears.

Worked on an Austin Healy with a 302 motor, C-4 and 8" rear end build by an engineer.

It would run out of gas after 5 miles of steady hiway driving. It had two small fuel filter. I replaced them with one large one. Problem gone.

The smallest hole in the fuel system is the control for how much fuel will flow. If you have a 1/2" line with a 1/8" fitting then the system will only flow an 1/8" of fuel.

Yep, I’m on same page as you Dwight. Smallest restriction is THE effective fuel pipe diameter. Really annoyed that the FE specific braided ‘F’ shape fuel log from Summit has 9/32 bores in the feed branches to the carbs, but also 9/32 in the line that attaches to the main feed. How does that work?

Regarding the GPH, realistically I’m not likely to be driving this car at max revs in any gear, so will set out with the 72 gph pump, that of course I’ve already bought 😀
