Default Finally getting some paint

OK. I like the color on the 3M Wicked 1080 automotive wrap but I want to paint instead of wrap the car. I have not seen any factory colors and the body shop guy used a guy from his paint supplier for all his custom colors because he could look at something and know how to mix it. That guy has just passed away. Let me lay out what I am looking for and you guys point me the right way.

As mentioned, I like the 3M Wicked as it is a very dark blueish purple/black depending on the light. It isn't a significant color changer like some, but it can get somewhat like the Mclaren Amethyst Black or the Viper Stryker Purple (but darker) in the sunlight. Any clues as to how to match that color? I also want ghost stripes where the normal ones would go. The reason I started looking at the wrap is I was told by several "experts" that candy colors do not hold up well over the years. I actually had some samples and applied them to the car and that is how I found I really like the Wicked color. I don't want much red to the color, I guess more of a purplish blue or blueish purple.

So, color code ideas? Candy, pearl? Does candy last if we go that route? Different pearl for ghost stripes, correct?

Thanks.

(The color I am looking for.)

Longevity and durability will all depend on exposure to the elements and quality of materials.
As far as matching the color. If you can't find a specific paint code. You will need to find a painter that can experiment with pearls or candy colors to get what you want. A good painter should be able to put down a black base and make a candy purple pearl to your liking. I'd think a couple to few coats of a candy pearl (depending on product and application methods) should give you the effect you are looking for.

Brent,

I don't know if you have them there but we have an auto paint shop here that uses a computer to read the paint on a car. They place a detector in several spots and then transfer the readings into a computer which mixes the paint. I have seen them match perfectly some custom paint jobs including one that I had on a Comet. But you do need a car with that paint on it for them to check.

I figured a pearl over black but wasn't sure exactly how to apply. The car is garaged other than when I drive it but so far candy paints are not guaranteed as long as the others from any mfr. I was hoping a pearl with no candy might work.

Ron, that is the problem, I don't have a car with that color already. I guess I could get a sample of the wrap.

Brent,

That might work. I have never seen anyone around here do that but you could ask one of the paint places and see if they could do it that way.

I was at the New England Auto Show in Boston this weekend. There was a new paint color on the Toyota Avalon right by the entrance when you came in the main door. It was called Black metallic. Kind of reminds me if the effect you show in the photo. It looked black in the shadows. But when light struck in the purple metallic popped! Not quite as dramatic as the wrap. But would be more durable. Any paint shop would be able to get the paint code.

I will have to check out the local Toyota dealer and take a look at the color.
