Default Using split cv boot?

Tried search but nothing. Anyone use one? Cars a weekend ride only and reviews on them are good if installed properly. Thoughts?

I try to do things right. I have never used a split boot and do not intend to.

How much time are you really saving; 1 or 2 hours?

I've never used one but would not hesitate to do so. If it fails who cares? Not much loss. You can always do it the other way later.

Try a Google search for "superformance cv boot". I got about 30 hits from this forum. (Google seems to work better than the search engine on this site btw).

Several threads describe the metal bands loosening allowing leaks. (hopefully that is your case). Other call out PNs for replacement boot etc...

From what I read the early cars uses a Thunderbird IRS and Inner boot is OEM. Dorman makes a split boot (solvent glued)

Outer is SPF made and Olthaff racing seems to know the boot PN its said on the forum threads .

Back in the old, old days, we would just get a tire inner-tube, split it with a razor, wrap it around the boot, and cover it up with duct tape.

The split boots don't work that will, and will almost certainly leak. The loss of a little grease is no big deal. But it allows water and dirt to get in to the joint; and that's a bad thing.

If you have a small tear, use the split boot to cover that up. and seal the hole. It makes for a good temporary fix until you can do it right.

I had a tear in one of mine a while back. I cleaned it well, and then wrapped it in duct tape. Then secured it with zip ties. That lasted through a race week end and then a road trip without leaking any grease. When I had time, I installed a new boot.

I used to use a tool with several expanding fingers. You place the one piece boot over it and with compressed air it expands far enough to get it over the CV Joint without having to dismantled it. Takes 15 minutes. JD
