What’s this?.....new MSD Disributor.....wierd reluctor debris .

So tonight pulled the distributor from my new dyno’d and recently filled with oil , FE, prior to priming the oil pump with drill and socket. Turned the engine over for about 5 secs to test the starter, but that’s it. Until now had no reason to even take the cap off, so a little alarmed to see this inside. Used an airline and it all dissipated. Any ideas guys?

Are you using the ventilated cap?

Gaz64 01-28-2019 05:05 PM

Can we take the cap off and look at the advance mechanism?

9 out of 10, this due to dry advance weight pins.

The reluctor wheel becomes magnetised, and any amount of ferrous dust sticks to the wheel.

Gary might be right. Note the differences between your condition and my common MSD ozone corrosion condition in this thread: http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/fe-t...dont-like.html

What’s typically used to lubricate them? Aren’t they designed to slide on those nylon buttons that snap in underneath each?

rodneym 01-28-2019 07:43 PM

I just had an issue a month ago.
My 6 year old unit rusted and wouldn't return back to initial.
New one is locked. But good question about the lubrication.

A Small Dot of Lubricant

The MSD instructions say:

Quote:

Install the center plate followed by the weights. A small dot of lubricant on the bottom of the weights will ensure smooth operation.

Now, is that "small dot of lubricant" sewing machine oil or Moroso Climbing Gear Lube?

The weight pivot PINS are dry, they need some grease.
The button slides are delrin etc and don't need anything.

I just checked mine and same issue . What did you use to lube/protect it from happening again?

Gaz64 01-29-2019 01:05 AM

After a cleanup, work some moly grease into the advance weight pivot pins, and a smear over the rest. MSD claims this doesn't happen anymore.

So back to the OP, can we see a pic with the cap off please?

Here is the cap and rotor. No scare marks. Looks perfect and new to me, which it is. Only dyno’ I’m told.

Gaz64 01-29-2019 03:24 PM

Can we see a photo of the advance mechanism with the rotor off?

Could also be from the top bearing, since it is a ballbearing not a bush.

Gaz64,
Where is the bearing??

… and let's go to the videotape.

rodneym 01-29-2019 09:51 PM

Man he cleaned that thing.

Gaz64 01-30-2019 04:03 AM

Turned it from the billet look to polished, OTT.

Looks much better, a bad example, probably out of 4WD.

Here is a top bearing:
