Brent, you're wasting your breath (like so many of us already have in this thread). I went back as BDR Boy suggested to look at his other posts and this guy is nothing more than a $hit disturber, a troll or possibly both.

He is definitely not worth the effort that has been expended on his behalf by so many here. The only possible good that has come out of this thread is others understand more about distributor gear materials and what to use where. Of course the bonus (if there is one) is recognizing him for the jerk he is.

I find the ignore function on the site particularly useful with posters like this ...

I do not understand your hostility.I come only looking for info.I am still learning so bear with me. As for being a jerk I am not as for being a $hit disturber guilty as charged ;)

Bronze gears DO NOT last 100k miles, PERIOD.

Install one as a shift knob and they'll PROBABLY make 100K miles. LOL

I would put a bronze pinion gear in the rear end while your at it, would make sense because it would contact steel ring gear and you could change right along with distributor gear, I would mark my calendar the 32nd of every month.

'Way back I posted that I'd installed a composite gear and asked opinions....which I received, but the thing I noticed was that no one has mentioned any experience with one. Comp Cams recommended it by stating that it would last many times longer than bronze.
My question is: has anyone actually used one and if so, what was your experience with it?
ENquiring minds want to know.

blykins 08-08-2019 10:39 AM

They don't last either.

I wish everyone would stop pining for different materials and new technology on distributor gears. It's straight up easy. Steel-steel. Iron-iron.

Wow, I have been out trying to break stuff driving my car around and had the day off and saw this thread. I had this exact discussion a year ago on the 460 forum after my new cam ate the bronze gear after a short amount of time. Blykins was most helpful and pointed me in the right direction. I had already installed a new bronze gear by the time I posted and discussed but pulled it and changed to what the guy that has forgot more than I know told me to do. So far, all is good, not sure why it takes 6 pages but whatever. Put the bronze back in and check it every month or don't, but go drive it either way and make sure you keep an eye on it. My bronze gear that comp cams recommended failed in the middle of Bum F!@# Egypt in the middle of an awesome drive on the coast. Ruined my day. The cam guys are going to recommend whatever saves the cam gear so you don't go back on them. It is not done with malice, it is just safe for them. Put your dizzy back in, drive the piss out of it and report back. I would love to see it.

I have a composite gear in my 504 Kaase motor. It has lasted about 2,500 miles so far. Checked it a week or so ago and it had very little to no wear on it. Started out with a bronze gear because I didn't know what my cam was made of and it lasted about 1,000 miles before it wore and made me nervous. Called Comp cams and they of course recommended a bronze gear. Still don't know what my cam is made of as its a special Kaase grind and the part number doesn't have a number designation but I will probably call Kaase to find out and put the appropriate gear back on after a few more miles or when I get time.

:DThanks for the info boys !

Karl Bebout 08-09-2019 09:31 AM

One more thing for my "to do" list before heading out on my AZ, Arches UT, Kalispell, Banff, Anacortes WA, Moro Bay CA, Mesa AZ, jaunt in a couple weeks. I'll dig out my cam tag and will call the maker to ensure I get the correct gear this time. Anxious to take a look at the current composite gear. I'll try to post a picture, just for grins. I'm pretty sure there's about 20K miles on it.

Just working my way through this epic....

Brent, don't send it! I've been there, done that (no, not with a bronze gear) and then...something goes wrong, and no matter what the story is....who gets the blame?

Cheers,
Glen
