Any time we have an oil temperature debate around here, we always like to include this chart. We also usually include a few fancy airplane engine articles too, those generally tend to come in a few degrees lower than this chart for the "absolutely, perfect, you're wonderful, you're doing great" temperature for oil.

Default Oil Temp with Laser.

Today was the first nice day in a while. I have the front of the cooler blocked off with insulated metal duct tape. Temp is pushing 90 outside. Took a nice long ride. Oil temp on gauge reads constantly at 140-150 degrees. I took several readings with a laser temp reader and engine running.

Remote oil filter- 205 degrees
oil cooler input line - 190 degrees
oil cooler output line - 175 degrees
oil pan next to sending unit - 185 degrees.

This is a new autometer gauge and sending unit.
Old autometer gauge and sending unit never got above 150 degrees also.

Thoughts.......

I trust the sending unit is in the oil pan with the 'probe' fully immersed in oil.

Did you install it with thread sealing tape or thread sealer of some kind? If so, it may not be properly grounded.

The directions from Autometer call for using a telfon thread sealant which is what I used. There is a reducer adapter that is screwed into the welded portion that holds the sender. Shorting the sender sends the needle to the highest reading so the gauge is working. Going to check it with an ohm meter next to see what kind of continuity there is between a good ground and the body of the sender. I noticed on the Autometer site there is something called a short sweep sending unit which is what I have. Just got off the phone with them and they confirmed the using a teflon thread sealer as well as using an ohmmeter to test the grounding. Onward....
