what radiator?
I have a 427 stroker motor that runs warm. It will overheat on hot days if pushed. I have a backdraft with a 16" fan the radiator has plastic tanks with aluminum coils. Car is a 2013 model and that is all I know . What would a good replacement radiator be also should I change out the fan? My motor I am told is close to 600 hp .

Get BDR's expanded cooing radiator, have ad it for years on my Roush 427 and works great. That o Mishimoto makes one as well.

I am not radiator expert, but the leading theory on radiator cooling these days is the more rows you add beyond what you need actually causes the radiator to cool less because air cannot pass through the radiator efficiently. If you go on many sites, you will see 2 and 3 row aluminum radiators now rated at 800 and 1000 hp levels. The 2 row radiators are about 2.25" thick and the coolant passageways are 1" wide allowing more surface area for cooling.
Instead of a 5 row radiator, look at a double or triple pass radiator. A triple pass will drop the temperature close to 20 degrees with only 2 rows. |
You can use any BMW E36 (manual trans) radiator for a bolt-in.

When my car shipped from BackDraft after Speed Fanatix installed the engine, there was no thermostat installed. It overheated very easily. I think without the thermostat installed, the water was flowing through radiator too fast to have a chance to cool down. Did you check to see what thermostat you have and make sure its working correctly?
Cooling fan wired with correct polarity on the wiring? What temp is Fan turning on at? Can you adjust what temp fan kicks on at? The aluminum radiator you get from backdraft can be purchased with the mounting brackets installed as the aftermarket ones will mount a little different. I think the backdraft one also has option for the aluminum fan plenum and such…. |
Backdraft has an upgraded aluminum radiator. I ordered a car 2 weeks ago and added that upgrade.

As far as heat transfer goes, you want the hottest water hitting the coldest air first, for the greatest efficiency. More rows helps along with greater capacity. A weak fan due to interior motor windings breaking down could also be part of the problem. Old owner used to keep fans running at all times.Not sure what omhs should be on motor for fan . It is my belief more hp creating more heat is my problem Original builder spent money on bling not knowing he needed to spend it on a upgraded cooling system for the motor he chose.

Fan is not a huge issue at 40 MPH and above.

Do you have a underdriven crank pulley? Retarded or over advanced timing can affect engine heat generated along with over concentrated antifreeze.
