windshield help!
OK my windshield is officially done, I am looking at the lexan style replacement, but also wanted to see what the current glass one is, as that may be covered by insurance and i dont think the lexan one would be knowing our insurance company here in BC.
The current one has the following code on it:
VELAS
E17 laminated
43R-00003
AS-1 M6 DOT 73
Anyone know what vehicle this came from originally? Google has not been helpful.

As I mentioned on an earlier topic try Shell Valley. I got my replacement glass from the Cobra parts side of the business. Shelby American sourced their glass from them and just told me to contact them directly. You can give them the label info to see if yours is a match. It's the same one used by many replicas.
Depending on your inspection requirement a non-DOT approved safety glass might not pass an inspection. (Canada could be way different though...)

The windshield glass in my car bears the label “VELAS Laminated 43R-00003 [E17] AS-1 M6 DOT 73.” It is an OEM Cobra windshield frame made in England – the glass is manufactured in Finland by the company V.E. Lipponen Oy.

Let's decode that:
VELAS: This mark identifies the manufacturer, by their name and/or logo (“the manufacturer’s distinctive designation or trademark”).
E17: Finland country code https://beranek.agrrmag.com/2013/04/european-codes/
laminated: Pretty obvious
AS-1: Not AS-I. The AS number stands for American Standard, and is “AS” (or “American Standard”) followed by a number indicating the position in which the glass may be used, based on its optical quality. AS1 is the clearest glass (at least 70% light transmission), is laminated, and can be used anywhere in a motor vehicle (typically just the windshield)
M6: "The M number is unique to the manufacturer, so one an M number of M312 by one manufacturer could be different than glass labeled as M312 by another manufacturer. It identifies the glass construction, including the color and thickness."
DOT 73: :The DOT code (DOT number) is the letters “DOT” followed by a number that the Department of Transportation (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) assigns to the manufacturer of the glass. This is required by FMVSS205 section S6.2. If you have a DOT code, here's a page that lists all known DOT codes." DOT number search: https://www.carwindshields.info/dot_db
From the database: DOT73 is V.E. LIPPONEN OY from OULU, FINLAND
'M6' and 'DOT 73' should be the only codes you need for a cross-reference to other windshield manufacturers. Any local auto glass shop s/b able to look up a compatible windshield and get you a replacement.
p.s. ICBC must be as fussy with windshields as is SGI in Saskatchewan. No AS-1 code? No approval. Not legal for road use.

I would recommend you find at least one that has a compatible glass in their stock and recommend the insurance company or local glass company source it from there. Then you know exactly what you're getting.
I replaced my glass by myself. I got an new rubber gasket that the glass sits in in the frame also from Shell Valley which made it easier. A stingy amount of silicon lubricant on the stubborn portions (corners) made it easy. It's a little heavy for one person to place the glass and frame back on the uprights so a second set of hands is helpful.
The glass and gasket was $435 (including shipping) in 2009.

I am looking for some guidance, on selling what I believe is an OEM windshield for a Cobra. I am selling off an estate and found this old unopened box with a windshield in it, and a receipt from 1995 from a company in Fort Lauderdale, FL that no longer exists. It is not a new item, but appears to be in as shipped condition with the plastic wrap, styrofoam and packing material around it from almost 30 years ago.
On the lower right of the glass it says:
VELAS Laminated
43R-00003. E17
AS-1 M6 DOT73
I would like to sell this, as the vehicle it was purchased for was sold Many years ago by the trustee, not realizing this windshield was in storage.

Thank you both, I called Shell Valley, but they only sell new items, but will reach out to factory five tomorrow. I may list it on Bring a Trailer as another option.
Most appreciativemof your suggestions,
Debra

Could someone tell me which type of Cobra this windshield will fit? I can’t find any information about it.
Thanks so much again ,

Debra,
What brand of Cobra replica was sold by the trustee? That might help in the identification process.

Shipping will eat most of the sale price. It actually doesn't weigh that much but the physical size will push you to a truck freight hauler. I think ups has such a division but places like Estes freight will be cheaper. Look to see how it was shipped originally

Debra, most members here are cranky old men, many pushing 80, and they won't put the effort in to answer your simple question. But I will.
The answer to your question is your glass will fit original Cobra style windshield frames such as Shelby, Contemporary, ERA, Hi Tech and Shell Valley. Your glass will not fit Superformance (SPF) or most other replicas.

Thank you gentlemen,
Come to find out the car was sold before the trustee came into the picture, hence my question. The types of vehicles listed will be helpful to me in listing it. What I have in the box is the windshield glass in the metal frame, with the rubber on the bottom and the 2 necessary pillars. Unfortunately the receipt inside did not give any pertinent information to what type of windshield it was.
I’ll take another look at the box to see who the carrier was, and then investigate shipping options, but it is a large box ~5’ long.
Best regards,
Debra

Debra,
Shipping a windshield is expensive and if it gets broken, many shippers will do everything that they can to not warranty the shipment. A local sale may be the best option.

Debra, I may be interested in the windshield, what is the asking price? If the windshield is located in Archer, Florida, I could arrange for a family member to pick it up.
Thanks, John
