Default 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 SC - Freshly Restored - Real Deal?

Could someone in the know check out the following eBay posting - is this actually considered a real Cobra?

I emailed the seller and he replied.....

Me...
This is a fiberglass Cobra - not a 'real deal', correct? I'm in the Sonora area and sold my Cobra last year - what on earth are you doing posting a 'real deal' Cobra that's really a replica kit?

Reply...
Thank you for the concern. However, you are mistaken. It is not a kit. It is an AC production, made by AC in England. It is not a half a million dollar aluminum bodied Carrol Shelby. It is a real AC production, not a kit.
_____

I still think it is a kit.

I'm pretty certain that is a kit and fake tag, no CSX number. If it was real it would be considerably more expensive.

Whatever it is it isn't a real original or even a CSX continuation. No educated buyer will believe the bloated description. It won't sell on ebay.

I just sent the seller a email about this AC Cobra I'm sure I'll get a bunch of sideway dancing about it being a "Real" AC Cobra, I asked for PROOF. I'll report back, TommyRot.

Well you know "Correct 1967 Eleanor Tail lamps w/ Sequential Wire Harness" and a red gas tank were typical features of real AC's.

You guys are sharper than that.

Consider,
  • The wheels are bolt on flea market refugees,
  • The gas cap in the back center is wrong placement,
  • The engine is a small block not an FE,
  • It is not a Super Snake,
  • That is not a Super Snake hood (bonnet?),
  • The collector is not a vintage correct collector,
  • The dash looks like it's also a flea market refugee,
  • The steering wheel looks like an eBay refugee,
  • And what in the world is that white thing, bottom center on the dash?

This is an obvious scam ...

Ed

p.s. Two more things I missed and Tom got one of them, the square tube frame and of course the other is the hard to see but really there, heat vents on the hood (bonnet?) on the driver and passenger sides.

Two problems jump out at me. If it is an AC made in England, it would not have a plate saying it was made by Shelby here is the USA. Also if I was really proud of my genuine AC car, I would have AC badging on the car, not Cobra.

I just spoke with the seller, he doesn't know what he has Alfa steering column, square boxed in frame, a Jag rear end? (I don't think so, with outboard brakes) Not even sure it a 427 engine (Bored small block? No paperwork, no proof) said he will get back to me, I said happy to help. Could be just a one off kit, or homemade special.

That's a Cleveland. And Clevelands won't go to 427ci.

I can't believe that they are trying to pass that off as a "real deal" Cobra. My kids would be able to spot the giveaways on that car. The unfortunate thing is it's a not a bad looking car and it seems like a pretty tidy build. If it was honestly represnted and priced accordingly it would be a nice ride for someone that just wants the "look" and doesn't care about authenticity. But it's being so intentionally misrepresented I would be leery of doing business with the seller at all. It's interesting that he has 100% positive feedback, and a lot of it.

Additional question - did AC or even Shelby in association with AC build Cobras made from fiberglass?

I remember the endless debates on this forum about what constitutes a "real" Cobra. No doubt the definition of a "real deal" is even more opaque. But if a jury decides the ad was misleading (e.g., how can it be made by both Shelby and AC when it is plainly made by neither), any buyer can attempt to claw back his money in the future whether the seller was deliberately deceitful or just ignorant. Caveat emptor.

Ed, not sure about this. It clearly says in the ad that it's a "Shelby Exotic Wood Steering Wheel". It's well known that is a species of wood similar to the Joe Exotic Wood Steering Wheel.

There is no driveshaft or Diff installed so the "only test miles" comment was from the fact that Bob most likely got tired of pushing it around and making engine sounds.

I really do like the addition of 30years of dirt on the engine and soiled air filter. Its going the extra mile on the "restoration" that makes it worth every penny.

If it was completely restored they forgot to open the hood.

Does not look like a Jag rear end, but some Jags did have outboard brakes from the factory... mine does.

The right side steering column control looks like it might be for the windshield wipers and washer spray. In this case the wipers seem to be stowed in their discreet and cleverly concealed compartments so as to reduce aerodynamic drag. I suspect these fancy wipers were only available as a special order from AC. I can understand why Shelby never ordered any chassis that way from AC since it is simpler to just remove the wipers on race cars to improve aerodynamics.

Look at the fine texture of the paint work over the fender badge. Most like a special period correct technique was used in the restoration to get that look just right.
