Default Edelbrock carb identification.

Can anyone help me identify the Edelbrock carb fitted to the Ford 302 in my Daytona please? It has 1805 S 5193 stamped on the front. Thanks.

I have another question please. I’m intending to have the engine set up on a rolling road. Should I take a selection of different jets, metering rods and springs with me in case they need changing? Or can adjustments be made on the carb itself? I realise it’s probably a dumb question because I won’t know until it’s on the dyno but just trying to avoid a repeat visit. It’s a Ford 302 btw.

I'm suspecting your dyno run will show a carb too big for the motor. Can it be jetted down to fit the motor, that is a question for your dyno guy, not us.

Thanks Bill. Is that the general consensus that a 650cfm is too big for the 302? If so, taking some smaller jets might be sensible.

Bill is correct. If you're spending the money on the Dyno make sure you have the necessary carb tuning items on hand.
Edelbrock kit for your carb is part # 1840. Unfortunately it looks like stock won't be available until 4/29/22. (At least at the reliable major US suppliers)

Thanks spdbrake and also for the link. The Edelbrock agents here in the U.K. are Real Steel and they are listed under the same part number so will give them a call in the morning to check stock. Chances are they haven’t got it so thanks for the “heads up”.

As suspected Real Steel cannot obtain any from the USA and even said it might be because it was now an obsolete item. Seems like the 1805 carb is no longer available so I hope they are not right!

Yes they did discontinue the 18XX Thunder series, kept the 14XX Performer series and a added the AVS 19XX (annular discharge primaries) series.
I don't think the discontinuation has anything to do with the kit you need. Edelbrock was in the process of switching their US foundries locations in early 2020 and have had a tough time getting back up and running.
I am a fan of the AVS2 vs the Thunder. I had a 750 Thunder and it always felt a bit sluggish at the off-idle tip-in. Switched to a 800 AVS2 and it works great. Very responsive. I did do some AFR (remote wideband) jetting and metering rod tuning but it only took about 2 hours to iron is out.

I'm in the process of going dual quad and ordered two 1904 AVS2 today.

Something new from Edelbrock for the Holley fans is the VRS-4150

Thanks for the info spdbrake. Always an uncomfortable feeling when you realise what you’ve got has been superceded!

Well after a long wait my turn came for the rolling road. The first thing he found was the vacuum pipes were connected the wrong way round so the one to the distributor was connected to the constant vacuum port. Having checked the timing the run showed it was running very slightly rich at the top end but not worth worrying about. So although I couldn’t get hold of a carb kit it wasn’t really necessary.

Nothing wrong with having distributor advance connected to constant vacuum, in fact in most cases it is desirable.
